Yes, they get a lot of $$$ through winning each race and various channels (including winning the constructors championship), but McLaren did not account or budget for losing $100M.

We are talking billions in this sport, but each team has to squeeze every penny into R&D to make a winning car. With an uncount number of staff on the payroll (race drivers, engineers, designers, maintenance, pit crews, lawyers, accountants, ...), this is a real corporation trying to survive in a cut-throat business environment.

McLaren may not feel the pain this year, as they are well ahead of other teams in terms of R&D, but they will definitely feel the squeeze of losing that $100M in R&D in the coming few years.

p.s. ironically, this is their primary reason for espionage as they had been losing out to Renault and Ferrari in the past few years.
