Yup! Frankly, dyno-tuned the Euro-spec 308 was not even 200HP/200TQ, so a Miata had more 'go' to it. You're right, she was a 'raw' drive and clack-clack gated shifter was fun. Problem was we upgraded the brakes and the engine would move a bit too much, and so that's the shifting problems you hear in the video as the linkage got out of alignment at times.
That's a very early vid, as eventually upgraded the suspension, swapped to lightweight flywheel/clutch, improved the engine rod to keep her from moving so shifting didn't mess up alignment, etc. Was planning to turbo her, yet lost interest in that project. My mechanic who helped me mod the 308 GTS got her, as by the time i was done the engine needed a bit of a rebuild due to at least 120+ track days on her (plus she was old so you kinda expect a rebuild anyway).
Like you said, she was raw fun and sounded great, yet 'slow' and safe for a learning guy like me who was doing his first track stuff. Sold her and went SCCA racing in a Formula 2000. Still raw with the LD200 tranny and 2L engine, yet at 1200 lbs wet with driver she was FAST and pulled ~3.5G in the twisties. That kinda ruined me for tintop (street legal) cars as once you go with a true race car.....
Ah well, fun with petrol
