I don't leave my keys in my car so I am far less likely to end up in this scenario. Guy jumps in my car and I call the police not jump on the hood.
I am also not willing to risk my life over a car that will be replaced by insurance.

This sounds like your American insurances are awesome ?
Over here insurance works otherwise ..When our cars are one year old that's - 10% value the insurance will cover , 2 year old - 20% , 3 year old - 30 % ect...
I would jump on my car as well ..
And *IF* the police would find your car after X time...In what condition you think your car would be ?
I'm sure your car would be never the same again !
