Things I don’t miss include replacing cv joints every six months, nonexistent rust protection, and turning off the a/c when merging on to the highway. I often toy with the idea of finding and restoring a mk1 GTI, but I’m afraid I’d be disappointed. The last car I drove that was equally as engaging was a 1991 porsche 944, and even that was being dusted by minivans between red lights. I have to imagine that a stock mk1 GTI would be dangerously slow on today’s roads, but I can assure you it would be one of my first purchases if I won the lottery.

Mine was also black to red interior. I didn't have a sunroof (less things to break, less weight), A/C didn't work because of hole in the evaporator, decided it wasn't worth the money/didn't really have to repair so removed all A/C parts (further reducing weight and making what was left easier to repair. I didn't have severe CV joint issues, replaced once in my 7 years of ownership. No A/C for 7 years with ownership FL, GA, TN, OR (drove from FL to Portland and back) actually didn't bother me that much, weird what you get used to and then becomes acceptable.
