All llamas spit -- under the right circumstances. I've never had a visitor spit on. I've been spit on numerous times -- for instance, I am holding the llama's halter at the front while the veterinarian does whatever at the back and the animal objects to the indignity.

Many years ago I loaned some llamas to a petting farm in Ellicott City, Maryland for a couple of seasons. Being retired, I also frequently hung out at the farm. Again, I never observed my llamas spit at visitors.

I think the ones that spit at people are llamas that have people always in their face. I always ask visitors to put their hands behind them and meet a llama with their nose -- just like llamas meet each other. When kids are involved, I call it a "llama kiss."

The "spit" isn't spit -- llamas swallow grass/food and then bring it back up later to chew on some more. "Spit" is partially processed grass. It's green. It's nasty.
