It's very simple, the goal in F1 is to win the constructors championship, period - that is the ultimate team goal. You can still win constructors even if you favor one driver, but it's a lot less likely for a driver to win the drivers championship if you're only focusing on constructors and playing the "team game".
McLaren is in a highly favorable position where they could potentially win both championships, so to come out with that statement and with the decisions they have made this season is starting to make me think that they don't have that next level mentality that Red Bull and Mercedes have. It's actually quite disappointing when everything is mostly in their favor.
