My personal recommendation is using a Garmin of some sort if you want good data. I know you said "mechanical" watch....I'm just choosing to ignore that part of the question
As a competitive triathlete, I used the Garmin Forerunner 910 for MANY years and it was amazing! There are certainly cheaper options if only doing running, but yeah I certainly would not go with a "mechanical" watch. All the "digital" options are fantastic, comfortable and provide excellent data.
