I've only ever had 2 male friends who were under 5'9. One was because he had a disease where he had incredibly low bone density, so his legs broke constantly when he was a kid. By the time I met him he had titanium rods bolted to his legs for support (and yes, it was very painful), but he would have been like 6' had his legs grown properly as a kid.

The other was a little 5'7 kid. He used to get mad that everyone was taller than him and hated it when me or our other buddy who was also 6'2 used to bend down to hear him in crowded/loud bars. He threw that stat out a lot, but I always found the average to be more like 6' to 6'1.

I suspect the number is skewed by some people who are really short, and the median is much higher.
