In 1903, the Wright brothers flew an airplane for the first time with a top speed of 30 mph just a few feet off the ground and with a range of 900'. Sixty years later, the SR-71 made its first flight with a speed of 2,200 mph (or faster) at an altitude of over 85,000' and a range of 2,900 miles.
