Tire balance has more finesse to it than most realize, especially with performance tires and wheels, but many shops still give the job to the most inexperienced mechanics.
Often the tire machine tells them where to put the weights and they just blindly follow the machine readings. This is quick and easy, and the machine says they did it right.
However, if some of the weights are quite heavy it may affect handling and smoothness, despite the machine readings. A really good shop will break the bead loose and rotate the tire on the rim to try to avoid using large weights. It’s more of an art than a science.
