Most tire shops will aim to clear inventory before tires get 6-years old, but even that is somewhat arbitrary and depends on how they were stored.
Tire degradation due to age is very environment dependent. There is not a magic "fall off the cliff" date, but some time after 10 years you might want to get going on a replacement.
Usually, the sidewall will show signs of cracking, or the tread blocks will start chunking off as a sign of rubber degradation.
Either that, you the tire sidewall letters spell "Pirelli", in which case, you should probably replace them ASAP.

Considering some (all?) manufacturers won't CPO a car with 6 year old tires, it's not just a scare tactic to get you to buy new tires. It's a legitimate safety issue. Tires are the only thing that connects you to the road, don't be cheap.
