Why would it speak English in Turkey, where they have a language of their own? It's possible but unlikely. There is a very nice movie "
Water for Elephants".
They didn't know an elephant understood Polish(?) and thought it was hopelessly dumb while it wasn't at all, they just had failed to teach it English.
