In most cases, a smilie can change the tone of a comment made. It does become a bit harder to decipher the intended tone when a smilie isn't present. In any case, my motto is to offend anybody/everybody and care not! Usually it is those who want to be offended who take offense to everything stated. Too many people walk on egg shells.
