yeah...I did too. I do not like knowing its out of my control.
But as time goes on...I realize not much is guaranteed in life. And although I have made many mistakes...bad decisions and let others down...etc, you just can't rely on others never failing you either. You do not know what will happen...its part of life, and being in relationships. If you are lucky, most things will go smoothely without many issues. But...its not fully in your control. So...that phrase is a way to just do what is best for yourself and those you care about.
