Its just not worth the headache of loading up a car with stuff it was never intended to carry. Though I must admit, the trunk is much larger than you would expect.
On the subject of trunk space, the 4th generation VW Jetta has an ENORMOUS trunk considering the overall size of that car. I could fit more in that trunk than I can in my E90 or even my wife's Volvo S60.
