+1 on stretching your budget for plasma. Even some of the best LCD's still have issues with blacks and/or greyscale, as mentioned above.
Also, just my personal opinion, but if you're going 42" or larger, I would definitely recommend 1080p (if you have a device that outputs 1080p to the TV of course).
