Yeah, it's just a party. Could be fun, hang with your friends. Just be safe.
I went to Jr. proms 3 years in a row, 2 Sr. proms; they all kind of melt together in my mind, 20 years later. I went to 2 proms at other high schools, too.
Seriously, if you find that you're not having fun, just leave. No big deal.
You can make it more fun by having dinner before, with a friend or 8, and you could plan something for after, also.
For my Sr. prom, the most memorable, 8 couples rented a chauffeured van for 14 hours - 6P to 8A. Nobody drank and drove. We partied in a friend's hot tub until 7A! Quite a night. My GF had to be home at 3A, so I went back to the party after. It took some planning to make it memorable, but seriously you could enjoy just the dance, too.
The key here is safety; lots of idiotic drunk drivers out on prom night.
