Things that should be more difficult to obtain or do

*Let's leave the gun debate out of this.

Two things immediately come to mind:

- I think obtaining a drivers license should by a lot harder than it is now. The driving test should be way more rigorous than just a few turns around the block. Parallel parking isn't even part of California's test anymore, which is bizarre to me.

- This one is controversial and is impossible to enforce, but I think some kind of aptitude or basic parental skills test should be done before procreation.

Definitely agree on drivers license and think there needs to be some type of periodic renewal test (every 10 years?).

Where I live, I will also say golf carts. They recently made it easier to kids to drive around on them and I've come close to killing 8 kids in 2 incidents already.

I'll also say pets. Too many people get them and realize they can't care for them and off to the shelter they go. Really unnecessary.

Parallel parking is a non-issue for many people who rarely if ever need to.. BUT why is the entire road test anywhere in the US conducted at 25mph or lower and in a designated exam area?? We all know the answer is that the road test examiners would be endangered by new drivers. What's wrong with this picture?

I am also in PBC and wholeheartedly agree about the golf carts. Not just the danger, but it pisses me off royally when I have to dart around kids (and adults) on golf carts while on my bicycle in an area that does not permit motorized vehicles because they refuse to yield

I see two primary issues:
1. Kids driving them without completing drivers ed / being licensed and without the ability to judge speeds or make other judgments involved in driving. I had a cart full of kids cut in front of me when I had a green light and was going 40 mph. I didn't see them and they didn't see me because a pickup was in the left lane to turn left (and the cart cut in front of the truck too). Still not sure how I didn't kill 4 kids that day - really no different than a car blowing through a red light, except they have less protection from death in a cart.

2. Allowing them to be driven on sidewalks in the opposite direction of vehicle traffic. When exiting a parking lot in a car and looking left for traffic to be safe before pulling out, kids on carts shouldn't be coming from the right and expected to stop at the stupid little stop sign the village installed for carts. They are kids and don't understand or appreciate the rules of driving - see #1 above.

I will say that shelters (at least here) are asking more questions now. Don't know all the details but they want to know about the household, the people living there, etc. They seem like they are trying to be more careful on who they will let adopt them, which is a good thing.

Parallel parking is almost a necessary skill to have where I live. Even if it wasn't, I think it demonstrates basic knowledge of maneuvering a vehicle. I agree with you that only testing below 25mph is nonsense.

Good call on the pets. Along the lines of what I was getting at with children. Too many people don't give any thought about it beforehand and then the children end up neglected and in shitty situations.

This is so true. And some of those children were unplanned, as I'm sure you are aware. They can also be resented because they were unplanned, which is very sad.

It's the OT, so I'm gonna say Funions and Prancercise vids should be harder to get (oh, and catless exhausts - are people still living in the 80's?).

Uhhh..FunYuns are delicious! So I would argue they be readily available to everyone. And Prancercise got me my rock hard gluteus that you can bounce a quarter off of.

I don't mind the gun debate, but we already have a firearms thread where all that goes down and more. And knowing the fine folk of OT, we'd probably go down a rabbit hole of name calling with that topic.

There are SO MANY other current issues that could be added with the same volatility and passion. Please let's not pretend there is only one elephant in the room, just because only one was mentioned.

I'm not a gun guy, but I'd never try to take that freedom away. But yes, IMO they are too easy to get.

A license would be my second one. No one should have a driver's license that hasn't taken the following tests every year, and passed them above 95%:

- physical driving test
- written driving test
- hearing test
- vision test
- spatial awareness test
- drug test

Everything should be easier to get. But anyone who gets something has to use it responsibly. I don’t like substituting access regulations for responsible possession and use. I guess that makes me a Libertarian, at least in this regard.

Driver's license however the US doesn't have a public transportation system to move people who cannot pass the test.

I understand where your logic is coming from, but I disagree. Using drivers licenses for example; do we make it easy/easier to obtain then hope people drive responsibly? I can't get behind that. I think there should be a test, more rigorous than it is now, to "prove" that you're capable of operating a vehicle.
