2008 535xi Flashing P on gear shirt lever

Hello,

I read that it is a problem with the parking brake system. A battery we had in the car for about 1.5 years died twice within the past couple months due to not using the vehicle. This last time we charged the battery, the vehicle turns on but the flashing p won't let us drive. I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?
