Any adverse outcomes for non-stop using Auto Start/Stop for over 100k miles?
I had my Auto Start/Stop turned off after one week of buying my car. That was 85k miles ago. My concern was not only the constant tear and wear on the starter and less than optimal engine lubrication at each start up, but also incompletely burnt fuel and resulting sooth, etc deposits.
Tell me I was wrong...?! What is/was your experience using it?

I’m not asking for opinions or discussions. I’m asking for facts. Did anybody experience problems using it nonstop for 100,000 miles or more?

Turned it off on our '22 G30 540i since new. 23k miles later, no problems. Wife gets over 32mpg with it, but I have never believed ASS saves significant fuel anyway.

I am sure BMW is not careless and stupid and they made their calculations before comiting to the feature. This feature is primarily aimed at the European markets, as many Europeans have been turning on and off their ignition at red lights since the 1970's or before. So it's perfectly legit to inquire if it worked or not after more than 12 years of use in millions of BMWs.

I can give you ⅔ of an answer. I used it for 67,000 miles with no problems on my 2020 X540i and saved roughly 80 gallons of gas in that period of time. I have now sold the car and replaced with an X5M60i, where I am still using it.
With the LCI, the ASS runs off the mild hybrid system, so I don’t see any downside to using it. And the starting is seamless, coming from the electric motor for the instant before the V8 kicks in. |

In my F30 the ASS seems like a low cost modification "target of opportunity" by BWW using the standard(?) run of the mill starter motor with traditional interface that was already used to start the engine. Still, BMW must have thought of the wear/tear due to the ACC. And looks like it's not an issue since do not see people talking about it causing issues, nor articles on it. Unless the vast majority of BMW owners around the world tuned them off also, like in the US...

Opinion on autostart

I’ve personally had better long-term reliability with it off. Engine feels smoother, and I’d rather spend a bit more on fuel than deal with a knackered starter or clogged intake valves. And 100% agree — if a forum helps you out, the least you can do is come back and share the fix. |
