Ditching work for a foggy weekday morning car meet in my M2

Last week at 7:00AM, a fellow M2 owner and I made our way to Good Vibes Breakfast Club, a weekly Cars and Coffee held every Friday morning 5,000 ft above Los Angeles deep in the mountains along California State Route 2 (Angeles Crest Highway). You’d think that a Friday morning car meet might not have a good showing, since most people have the responsibilities of a grown adult like work or school. However, this is LA — to say car culture is strong here is an understatement.

What makes this Friday especially interesting, and a little sketchy, is the fog and the wet. Visibility is very low and my buddy’s Zandvoort Blue M2 virtually disappears more than a few car lengths in front of me. Thick white mist, heavy air, and damp, cracked pavement make for a perfect photo op, so we pull over to grab a few shots of the M2s.

The photos come out great, but we can’t help wonder— would anyone else actually show up in this weather with such low visibility and wet conditions?

We arrive at Newcombs Ranch, where Good Vibes Breakfast Club has been traditionally hosted for years. Bimmers, Porsches, an LS swapped Mitsubishi Starion, Lamborghinis, and everything in-between driven by enthusiasts, videographers, car photographers, and the occasional well known automotive youtube personalities manage to make the climb.

Everyone’s hero, the Caltrans snowplow drives by, and we give it thanks for clearing the road of rocks and debris that chip our paint and windshields. To my surprise, it’s now 8:00AM on a Friday, and there is a full blown car meet 30 miles up the foggy mountains above the city.

At around 10:00AM, people start to filter out. My buddy in his Zandvoor Blue M2 left earlier to get back to work, not wanting to push the limits of playing hooky.

On the way down, I stop to take a few last solo photos. A Diablo and a Spyder happily cameo my photos as they pass me on their way home. At this point, I’ve hesitated to return to the real world long enough and pack it up for the rest of the drive down.

The fog thins out as I reach the bottom of the mountain, back into the city. No more windy roads and natural scenery. Back to the grind within the concrete jungle and perpetual gridlock of bumper-to-bumper traffic. Maybe escaping it all is why we manage to make it up here on a weekday morning. Maybe the fact that we aren’t supposed to be here is what makes it fun.

Partying with a bunch of gearheads on a school night and now you’re skipping work just because it’s Friday!! What kind of example are you setting for the rest of us??

Cool photos!! I’m glad you didn’t rear end your buddy in the fog!! I got a little nervous about what I was about to read when you said he disappeared in front of you in the fog!!

Ditching work and responsibilities kinda makes it more fun lol!

We definity took it easy when the fog got heavier. That’s when I wondered who would be crazy enough to come up in this? Turns out there’s a bunch of us!

I think you made the right choice, and certainly got some fantastic pictures.

Some very cool cars, love the Active Red R34, ultra rare. The Starion makes me cry, always loved those cars.

Starion was my favorite. When I was in high school, my uncle had one and took me to school one morning and had my classmates drooling!
