  • The BMW ALPINA XB7 Was Completed in April.
  • The Seven Millionth BMW Will Become Part of the BMW Historic Collection.
Spartanburg, SC – April 30, 2025… BMW Manufacturing is celebrating a historic milestone this month as the seven millionth BMW rolled off the assembly line in Spartanburg, SC. To commemorate this special event, associates assembled a truly exceptional vehicle – a BMW ALPINA XB7 painted ALPINA Green Metallic and powered by a 4.4-liter BMW ALPINA Bi-Turbo V8, 32-valve engine, producing an impressive 631 horsepower. Due to its significance, this vehicle will remain at the factory and become part of the BMW historic collection.

"This beautiful BMW ALPINA XB7 is a testament to the great products we have, the quality of our supplier network, and the unwavering commitment and dedication of our valued associates,” said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing. “For over 30 years, BMW has proudly invested in South Carolina and its people, creating a remarkable legacy. We are excited about our future as we prepare to assemble fully electric vehicles at this plant."

Associates finished assembling the seven millionth BMW at the end of March. However, special “white glove” modifications by Plant Spartanburg’s ALPINA team were made during the next week. This included a specially designed ALPINA front apron, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler; floormats with the ALPINA emblem; and the installation of an ALPINA commemorative badge.

Other special features of the BMW ALPINA XB7 include 23-inch ALPINA CLASSIC CS16 wheels, Tartufo Full Merino Leather upholstery, ALPINA Walnut Nature Black trim, Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof, and second-row captain’s chairs. The leather steering wheel has blue and green stitching with an ALPINA badge in the center.

Associates at the South Carolina plant assembled nearly 400,000 BMWs in 2024 with nearly 225,000 of these vehicles exported to 120 countries around the world. Below are the milestone dates for BMW Manufacturing’s “millionth” vehicles:

1 Millionth BMW – February 28, 2006 – Z4 M Roadster
2 Millionth BMW – January 12, 2012 – BMW X3 xDrive35i
3 Millionth BMW – March 24, 2015 – BMW X5 M
4 Millionth BMW – September 8, 2017 – BMW X3 xDrive M40i
5 Millionth BMW – June 4, 2020 – BMW X5 M Competition
6 Millionth BMW – September 2, 2022 – BMW X6 M
7 Millionth BMW – April 30, 2025 – BMW ALPINA XB7

The BMW Group is investing more than $1.7 billion in its U.S. operations, including $1 billion to prepare Plant Spartanburg for the assembly of electric vehicles and $700 million for Plant Woodruff, a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in nearby Woodruff, S.C. By 2030, Plant Spartanburg will assemble at least six fully electric vehicles along with internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the same site.

Since 1992, the BMW Group has invested more than $14.8 billion in its South Carolina operations. BMW Manufacturing is the largest BMW Group plant in the world, assembling more than 1,500 vehicles each day. The plant is an important part of BMW’s global production network and plays a critical role in meeting the high demand for BMW Sports Activity Vehicles and Coupes in the U.S. and around the world. Nearly 57 percent of its vehicles are shipped to 120 global markets, making BMW the largest automotive exporter by value in the United States for more than a decade. In 2024, nearly 50 percent of BMW vehicles sold in the U.S. came from Plant Spartanburg. The model portfolio includes six top-selling BMW X models, four Motorsport X models, and two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle X models. The factory has an annual production capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles and employs more than 11,000 people.

A success story! Well done.
My 2005 E85 Z4 has been assembled in the Spartanburg plant 20 years ago.

Cool story glad to hear it! Would be better if that new plant were focusing on clean efficient diesels. Don’t care about electric and hybrids are just double the mechanics/problems with tiny sounding engines when diesel does it all and better.

I like the X7 mostly because it retains some of the prior generation X5 (f15) smooth continuous body styling in a larger vehicle but the front end and squinty looking headlights really throw this design off.

Hope they can improve the design particularly in this area, retaining some classic sharp BMW looks while bringing back a refined opulent but sporty appearance.

I'd love if they brought the next gen Z back to SC!

Well tbh I think IF that ever happens that’s probably a given. The current Z4’s body is made in the US, and then it’s assembled in Austrian.

It’s really hard to say if and when there will ever be a next generation Z.

Thanks for sharing. I happen to be there at the Performance Center today collecting on the driving experience benefit. Strangely, we did not get the opportunity to thrash an Alpina XB7…

An estimated 50%-60% of the parts used by the Spartanburg plant are imported from outside the USA, from countries targeted by the Administration’s tariffs. If things stay as they are, this will inflate the price of vehicles. In 2024, the plant exported over 225,000 vehicles to countries targeted by tariffs, including China and Canada. The idea that the complex supply chains involved in the plant’s manufacturing can be quickly reshored back to the US in less than 5 years seems optimistic. And the idea that recipients of its exports like Canada and China are just going to do nothing to retailiate is also optimistic. It may work, but it seems a very risky experiment.

I have two cars built at Spartanburg, 11 years apart from each other. My E86 Coupe and my wife's Z3 Roadster. Both have the same last three VIN digits. Karma.

They made a very attractive x7 into an derivative that doesn’t work. We had wanted an x7 and it’s just not something we’d consider based on looks alone.

So true. Much more demand for SUVs and crossovers than coupes and Z verts, especially in the US. But the global demand doesn’t seem much different either.

Right but the real point of the tariffs is NOT about reshoring production locally. That’s a nice to have. The real point is for other countries to match or better the tariffs on US exports to their countries to level the playing field.

It’s also to reduce the dependency on income tax. I’d rather have more after tax income and then I’ll decide what imported product I want to buy that may cost a bit more than before. For some it’s cars, some watches, some wine and spirits, etc. And for some it’s nothing because not everyone is into imported luxuries.

As for the cheap bullshit we buy on Amazon… you’re talking about a product that costs $20 becoming $30. That’s with a 50% increase. Which you won’t actually see. Price elasticity is a thing on cheap bullshitnwhwre the markup is 500%.

What BMW is doing in SC is awesome. I love it.

I was all upset that my G30 540i was built in Graz instead of Dingolfing. Then I owned it for 6 years… what a brilliantly well assembled machine. No complaints about the Austrians (except one). They are rightly proud of their culture, especially being more social than even Bavarians.

I love what BMW is doing there. Tried to get hired there 35 years ago when they were just starting up a few years after graduating with my engineering degree at a nearby well known university. Fate had different plans. We’ve owned 4 vehicles built there, 2 X5s and 2 X3s. BMW figured out the global supply chain priorities decades ago and are reaping the benefits. Largest $ exporter of autos each year for many years. We need more of that.

💯 BMW is smart just like the many other large companies investing $B in the USA or have committed to do so.
