Replace tires with sufficient tread based on age?
I've never had a car where the tires got all that old before wearing down the tread, but my daughter the student puts far fewer miles on her car.
Her tires are 6 years old and still have decent tread depth, but she's being told that new ones may be in order just due to age of the rubber. They are quality Michelin tires, not an el cheapo special. Any thoughts from those of you who know way more than I do about this sort of thing? Thanks! |

Car parked outside a lot? probably good reason to look for new ones if so but you could probably wait for a deal to come around.

Six years is the age where tire folks are going to start saying new tires are needed. I say if the rubber is not showing physical signs of deterioration you can probably go another two years at least. Does she have to drive on long road trips? That would be a reason to consider swapping now.

Michelin says tire life is a maximum of 10 years from manufacture date. https://www.michelinman.com/auto/aut...need-new-tires

What's the price of a potential accident? Much higher than the cost of new tires IMO. 6 years is the standard for a reason. Not 3, not 7, etc, but it does depend a lot on condition. I would inspect them for any sort of cracking, but in the absence of cracks I would still replace them for my daughter.
Excellent question, and I concur. |

i would change them out.
you can also go 15-20k between oil changes depending on how the car is driven. but its not good practice.

Most tire shops will aim to clear inventory before tires get 6-years old, but even that is somewhat arbitrary and depends on how they were stored. Quote:
Usually, the sidewall will show signs of cracking, or the tread blocks will start chunking off as a sign of rubber degradation. Either that, you the tire sidewall letters spell "Pirelli", in which case, you should probably replace them ASAP. https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-gar...3xALN5-HwccPX8 Quote:

I think a quick search will tell a different story, but hey, you do what you want, it's your life. Unless the conditions are perfect, and I mean absolutely perfect, there is no way I'd keep a set of tires for 10 years. It's simply not worth the risk. |

Interesting datapoint you chose. What manufacturers are you aware of that CPO any of their cars that are six years/72 months old? BMW doesn’t CPO cars over five years/60 months old and I’m not aware of any others that CPO cars older than five years.

I've looked up BMW CPO requirements, and the tire section only references tread depth, not tires' age: https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...1881317958.pdf Quote:
But also, don't be silly and wasteful. Quote:
OP's tires are made by Michelin. Another poster referenced (and I'm re-linking) Michelin's official position on its tire longevity: 1). After 5 years or more in use, your tires should be thoroughly inspected at least once per year by a professional. 2). After 10+ years after their date of manufacture, as a precaution, Michelin recommends replacing them with new tires. Any other opinions are pure speculation for speculation's sake. Quote:

What should we all do - follow advice of the tire manufacturer, or some internet strangers? You decide! HTH, a

I bought my 2011 Porsche Cayman with 67K miles CPO'd by Porsche Colorado Springs in October 2022. It was nearly 12 years old at the time. It did come with new Pirelli P Zero summer tires which are far and away the worst summer tire ever made.

If the tires aren't showing signs of degradation, I wouldn't bother replacing and go another 2 years or so. I put this right up there with changing out brake fluid every 2 years. Inspect and test it. If you did, you'd see that brake fluid usually tests fine even after 4 years.

My tires are 10 years old on the Challenger; I already bought 2 and will put them on this weekend. I already changed them on the 10 years old Jeep.
I don’t want a blowout. Why take a chance.

Not sure what I would do if it was my daughter's car but the manufacturer Michelin has their recommendations and they would know better then me. We all have our personal opinions but we all do what makes us sleep best at night.

Porsche McLaren Rolls Royce Bentley Ford Toyota Honda I know for a fact that Ferrari Porsche and RR all have tire age requirements, pretty sure Ferrari is 4 year old tires max. My 458 had 4 year old tires and had to be replaced prior to CPO. I would suspect the others won’t CPO a car with 10 year old tires either. |

one other thing that breaks down over time are the bands on the sidewall. You cannot see the decomposition and these are sensitive to time. when they do breakdown, you get a weird drift as if out of alignment.
I would say if you do not drive in cold conditions or extreme heat, 6-8 years is ok. |

You asked which manufacturers will CPO a car older than 6 years so I told you the answer. Whether you care or not has no bearing on the facts. There is a reason these manufacturers will not certify a car with 5-10 year old tires on it. Aston goes up to 10 years old for certified cars too and they also won’t CPO one with old tires. |

Since you’re not the person who posted that he bought an eleven year old Porsche with a CPO warranty, please post definitive information confirming Porsche will provide a factory backed CPO warranty on one of their vehicles that is more than six years old. As I mentioned, everything I found published by Porsche indicates their factory backed CPO warranty only lasts for two years beyond the end of the new car warranty, which effectively means they don’t CPO vehicles older than six years. They just don’t specifically state whether they offer their CPO warranty on vehicles older than six years. Any Tom, Dick, and Harry Motors can claim they have CPO’d their cars and offer a “warranty” that is actually only good at their specific dealership. In the United States an actual CPO warranty is known as a warranty backed by the manufacturer that can be used at any franchise brand dealership in the country.
