Honda's readying new S2000 kit to celebrate the sports car's 20th anniversary

New custom sports car, with updated fascia, fenders and spoiler, to be shown off at 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon

The Tokyo Auto Salon is an annual show that showcases aftermarket parts and technology displays — think of it as SEMA but with taste, and also with parts we’ll likely never see in North America.

This year (or, rather, next year) Honda will be bringing an upgraded S2000 sports car to the Salon to celebrate the model’s 20th anniversary, but be warned the car comes with a few tweaks to bring it into the 21st century.

This particular car started life as an AP1-generation S2000, to which a new front bumper was added, along with side skirts, more prominent fenders and a rear spoiler.

Only one teaser image of the upgraded vehicle has been released, but it does show off the new front fascia, which kind of makes it look like a Renault Alpine. We can see the splitter is now a little lower, and there are also side skirts to give the vehicle a lower appearance.

Honda said the S2000 is also sporting a new suspension system, as well as an upgraded stereo. A set of 17-inch Advan RZ2 wheels adorn the sports car, and the windshield frame has been painted black and made thinner to give the car a more sleek appearance.

The sun visors and rearview mirror also appear to have been deleted, and the outside mirror caps have been darkened, too. Could this perhaps be a speedster concept? We’ll have to wait until January to find out.

Honda has brought a modified S2000 to the Auto Salon before in the form of the S2000 Modulo Climax, in 2013. It featured a chrome front bumper that echoed the eyebrow styling of current Hondas, as well as a custom red paint job.

The funny thing is that if they just started building them again, especially an AP1 engine and suspension with an AP2 roof, I'd go buy one.

Same. Always preferred the lazy torque of my M Coupe. But loved driving the S2k, especially on the track. The AP1 was an over steering little thing, much like the Z3M, but sounded glorious.

The S2000 has awesome controls and cockpit setup. Very fun car and it proved that electric steering can have perfectly awesome steering feel....way back in 1999.

AP1 engine
AP1 is vastly overrated, AP2 engine is better with nicer powerband and the AP2 cars were improved as well.

Meh. Give me more revs and more oversteer. I've driven both extensively and vastly prefer the AP1. The AP2 probably makes a vastly better daily driver, but that's the last thing I'd actually want to do with an S2k.

Like I said, I never owned one but had friends that did. Honda build quality and reliability with great performance and styling. I always really liked the car, I may get some heat for saying this but IMHO way better than a Miata.

No, needs more power & FI if it's coming back today. Also, much better stereo.

Both great cars & both had flaws. When a used S2K is not stupid overpriced, I'll buy one over another Miata.

The 02-03 AP1 has the same roof/glass set up as the AP2. Only the 00-01 have the crappy plastic window.

I had a 2001 as a daily for a couple years, they are fun cars but I think they are a bit hyped up.

edit: I currently own a 94 Eunos Roadster and enjoy that more than my S2000

I think the premium is based on the fact that the S2000 are more exclusive due to limited numbers and superior performance. They hold their value above a Miata, plus they aren't a "chicks car".....:)

Man, I loved my '01 AP1, but feel like the car just got worse from there. Yes, I liked the bodywork changes the AP2 had, but really missed the 9K redline. And the CR, wow, could they have made it any more ugly? Leave it to Honda to take elegance to ugliness.

That car always deserved a lightweight concept with the original 9K redline brought back. Instead of 2,809 lbs it should have been 2,500 via the use of carbon and composite materials, no A/C, no radio, etc. Oh well, they missed their chance at that.

they're cool. I just wish they made a factory hardtop version. one of the best manuals i've ever driven though. I'm more of a hardtop guy so i think i'd still take a toyota 86 instead, but the f20c is a gem and loves FI.
