My updated V1 serves me proper. I cant see how a 13 mile detect would be called for tbh other than marketing/bragging rights.

I believe it sets the benchmark no question.

Ah, just bought a Blendmount for my R7. Doesn't look like it'll work well with the R8 as the new one isn't flat vs the R7.

Lightbulb

Couldn't wait until late Summer or even Fall and the estimated $700 price tag isn't justifiable for my limited amount of driving. However, I've had my trusted R3 for years and I have been wanting to see just how accurate and helpful these "arrows" truly are?
So I grabbed a R7 yesterday. I'm getting it hard wired. Once I've had a week or so to test drive it, I'll share my thoughts. But I'm expecting greatness based on my history with Uniden and the current reviews. First thing I did was update to the latest Firmware.

Isn't it about time for an update?

I have an R3 and 2 R7s. They are great. I have an R7 in my G82, I'll likely sell that, and get an R8, when they are available. I should still be able to get a few hundred dollars for the R7.

Not sure which update you have? Latest is shown in my pic above. And yes, you should easily get a few hundred. The R7 used are going for $400 on eBay currently.

An update on your review of the detector after using it for a week?

LOL!! Oh that update.

Still has the superb range we've all come to know, enjoy and appreciate. Lots of customization. The arrows are surprisingly effective.
Once I took the time to to set it up to my liking and usage, it is an awesome piece of electronics! I haven't yet driven more than a 10 mile stretch but so far so great.

I've been driving with an R7 for probably 100k miles. I preordered it when it first came out and I drive about 35k miles a year. It's a great detector.

If I drove more than a handful of miles monthly, I'd definitely invest the money to have this, the absolute best Detector on earth.

Well that's reassuring.

What are your thoughts and experiences with MRCD?

I live in California, so, I have X, K and MRCD turned off. Everything here, uses Ka, and Laser, even our speed trap cameras.

MRCD is used in Virginia, Washington DC, Texas, New York, and Illinois. So, you would definitely need it in Texas. It's nice being able to turn off K band, because it falses to a lot of Radar Cruise Controlled vehicles, like Honda, and Acura, and automatic doors in shopping centers. I also run it segmented, with most of the bands turned off. Mostly just 4/5/and 8 turned on in California.

Good stuff. Yes, K band from all of these Adaptive Cruise is a PITA. Luckily not an issue with this detector.

The Uniden R8 is supposed to have better filtering. I'm looking forward to the updated detector. I should be able to sell my R7, no problem for $375-$400

Seriously considering an R7/8. My cousin has the R7. He seems to like it. I have a 15 year old OG V1 thats still working. Really a fan of the directional arrows. Still weighing plug and play R7/8 vs app dependencies/features with the V1G2. Will pull trigger in spring for the next driving season.

I can chime in here on this.

I've had more RD's than I can count, and I've tried most high end brands.
I recently purchased both a R7 and a V1G2. The R7 stays in my daily, and the V1G2 stays in my M3 (summer weekend car). The R7 is QUIET. It's got great range, and is an overall excellent RD. It has built in GPS and no bluetooth. The V1G2 works great by itself, but is more chatty and no GPS. You can connect your phone to the V1G2 and use an app called JBV1. It makes the RD be able to compete with the other high end GPS units. JBV1 is fantastic, but i don't always want my phone connected to my RD, which is why I like the R7. It has everything I need built in. The V1 has better KA detection, but the R7 is still fantastic.

Escort has just gone down the drain, so don't even bother. At the end of the day it depends on what you want and need from a RD. If you're going to use one daily, R7 all day. If you're going to use it in a weekend car and have a phone mount, the V1G2 paired with the JBV1.

Only other thing to note is the V1G2 is immune to radar detector detectors, and the R7 is hit or miss on that. The V1G2 is magnesium cased and the R7 is in plastic.

Yeah, there's a secondary market for the older Unidens, so upgrading isn't such a big deal. Haven't wanted or needed the "arrows" because of it lights up, you just slow down, doesn't matter where the guy is. But I would want to upgraded antennas and filtering. So keep your eyes open, aybe a slightly used R3 coming up soon

Uniden R9

I'm really hoping there's some serious user error with the latest Uniden detector/jammer system because this one talks more than a kindergarten class after a sugar infusion. It's the blind spot detection of all the modern cars that is killing me. There are a few settings you can use to ignore the ranges used by several of the manufacturers (like if a Toyota comes alongside, or a VW) but not nearly enough. Then there's a "Mark" button on the controller that you're instructed to use to set up an ignore for a given radar freq, but I 'mark' a K band, say, from a Subaru and then it chirps a couple of times after. Not a problem right? Well, if I get another make sidle up (happens non-stop in Atlanta traffic) and I hit the Mark button for that radar frequency, the system unmarks the one I just did a few seconds before. Same thing when I try to Mute the incessant K bands and X bands. The kicker is that every time I drive by a location I 'marked' something at, the system tells me "User Mark ahead", and then it makes a goofy chime noise when I hit that spot. What??? I don't gaf about all the marked locations (they system can have up to 2,000 of them). I just want you to ignore what I mark and not tell me every blessed time I'm approaching some random section of the road where I've tried to block out a Toyota blind spot detection radar freq.

For something this expensive ($6k installed), it's a nightmare. I'm going back to the guys who installed it and have them look at it because my last system worked exactly as you'd want one to, and was 1/4 the cost installed.

I can see your concerns. With all these newer cars using radar for active lane departure etc, it can be somewhat annoying. But the sheer performance with detecting Police, I'll take it. It's very simple to push the Mute button located near the shifter for me.

I thought so too, at first. But I'm constantly (like, constantly) having to hit the mute button. It's pretty insane. Hopefully the installers can help shut this thing up.
