Wallee, April 12, 2012 to September 6, 2024

We lost Wallee to kidney failure September 6th. I'm really going to miss my little buddy. He is special. I'm glad I have thousands of pictures of all the great times we shared.

I shared pictures earlier in the thread of Wallee doing one of his favorite things, running on the beach at low tide on Puget Sound. Just over a month later he was gone due to kidney failure.

Saying goodbye to a Dog is never easy and Wallee is no exception. My wife is especially heartbroken as she had a special bond with Wallee since she wasn't working when we got him as a puppy and was the one spending all the time with him while I worked and traveled a lot. We had in-home euthanasia and I recommend it. It made a big difference to us.

Australian Shepherds seem to have a tendency to tandem fetch and if there are more than two, they join in as well. We lost my Daughter's Blue Merle, Suede, on December 30th 2023. My daughter lived with us when she got him and needed to leave him with us the last quarter or two of college so we loved him like our own.

Our Red Tri Darby is now left without a tandem fetch partner.

Sorry to hear about your loss. The two of them look really happy together and you obviously have given them both a great life.

You’re right, it’s never easy, especially when it’s a pet with which you are really close. Hope your wife and Darby are doing ok.

Looks like he had an amazing life with many happy memories for you both. Sorry for your loss - never easy. I know for me the first week was pretty rough...gets better after that as long as you just focus on the memories. Hope your wife is able to do the same and remember him playing fetch and snuggles.

OCD psycho dog is not adjusting to a minor change this week. My DW and I switched sides on the bed after 10 years, and it has completely upset his nighttime sleep routine. He keeps curling up against my leg or head, then wakes up startled in a few minutes when he realizes that he's pasted next to me and not his mommy. The only time that he comes near me is if I have food or he is sick/scared and needs the bigger person for protection.....

An update on Max (aka. MaxiCat aka Catticus Maximus). I think I posted in another thread, but didn't do it here.

Long story short: torn left rear Achilles tendon. Two separate PRP procedures and about a dozen shockwave procedures couples with a custom orthotic.

The specialty rehab vet is STOKED-- his recovery has been nothing less than amazing for a 14 year-old cat. He's gaiting normally and putting weight on the tendon.

He's allowed to wander around without his orthotic as long as he's supervised-- i.e. no jumps. So, he's pretty much bootless all day in his heated basket while Mom's at work (he supervises her when she's working from home), and then he goes back into the boot at night so he doesn't jump off the bed.... again.

He's also losing weight, which is a condition to getting the boot off. He was 15.1 lbs today, with a goal of ~14.

He's not thrilled with the boot since his leg is working normally and not hurting, but he's adapted to it surprisingly well. Target to go fully bootless is May of next year-- that's a year after his second PRP treatment, and the tendon should be back to full strength by then.

We're all very, very happy. He's a "once in a lifetime cat" and we were worried he'd be in the boot for the rest of his (hopefully long) life.

R.

I don't know the full story of Max, but wish Max all the best on his continued recovery, 14 years old is no easy feat either!

We had good luck with those foam mini-stairs to let our old cat make it up onto/off of the bed (ours is raised up nearly 3ft high). Not sure if those would work in your place, but thought I'd mention it.

We did that when our beloved tuxedo kitty couldn’t jump on our bed.
In our case, we had to train her to use the stairs. Maybe trick her is
a better word. We put cat treats on the steps and next thing you know,
she figured it out.
