Weekender.
The issue is that it would have to replace the M2C-- and at triple the cost, it damn well better be triple the fun. R.

You don't need to spend $200K on a 911 to have a hell of a good time, much less trade your M2C. You can get a 997.2 base coupe 6MT with the 320hp 3.4 motor for $45-55K or a S model with 3.8L for $5-10K more. Then mod up and make it your own. Though notably slower, I guarantee you that a $45K-70K naturally aspirated flat six 997.2 is not any less exciting than a new $200K 911.
I've got a stock OG M2 DCT and a 2010 987.2 Cayman base 6MT with 265hp. The M2 is much faster (mid 12s@112mph vs lower 13s@102mph), but that Cayman is SO MUCH MORE than acceleration. Yeah, it feels pretty gutless below 4500rpms compared to the M2, but is screams and wails above that, the induction sound intoxicating, and the limits unreal for a street car that cost me low 30s. It begs to be operated between 5000-7000rpms. On the flipside, I absolutely love the M2 for a whole set of different reasons. It is so rowdy and menacing looking. It is tough to decide which one to take. Both cars have completely different driving styles and requirements. The M2's turbo torque commands respect when in turns and you must understand the dance between the accelerator, boost, and tire traction. The Cayman requires you to keep the rpms high, foot hammered on the gas almost all the time, and belief that the rear tires will stick when throwing it through the turns. The M2 wants to drift. The Cayman wants to slide.

The solution? A bigger garage.
Yeah, no. Well, until my father shuffles off this mortal coil-- then we'll move up to his house-- and he has a Big Freakin' Garage as well as another separate down garage. But, I'd MUCH rather have my dad around than the house! R.

Tell her that the Porsche Boxster is now the automotive equivalent of yoga pants among young women.

She drove it yesterday for the first time post-surgery (geez, does she heal quick!)-- she drove our niece to her graduation ceremony at Mines. The 20 year old niece? LOVED IT (and subsequently made a comment about "putting it in the will"). I did put some winglets on the triangle at the bottom of the A-pillar and a higher blocking plate (in exchange for the mesh one that the car came with) between the two seats-- it made a surprisingly significant difference in airflow in the cabin-- at least according to the Minister. Since she drove it from OH to CO, I'm willing to take her word for it. R. PS: The car *does* scream, beg and plead for a shorter shift arm-- since it doesn't have a center armrest, you tend to have your arm at kind of a wonky angle when shifting. The Minister actually mentioned that as well. R.

If a weekender take a long hard look at a 997.2, the big win of the 992 is it is easier to live with as a GT car, the 997 is a great weekender. If you want something unique look for a GTS, it is RWD and wide body so a bit of a unicorn, however values have gone totally ballistic in recent years. Ryan Freedman in Cali is the go-to dealer for quality in this space though you will pay for it. Regardless, you should save 6 figures on a 997 vs 992 prices. |
