People leave the USA for beaches in Mexico and the Caribbean and there are comparable locations right in Florida.

Like a random sandbar in the Florida Keys is 10x better than some of the Caribbean islands I have been to

That's why I love the keys; you're essentially in the Caribbean, but I can get there by car. It's a completely different world down there.

I would love to live in the Keys, but I am not trying to potentially lose my house 3-4 times a year because of storms

You'd more than likely be OK, but I hear what youre saying about living in the Keys. I'd go straight to Marathon if I had the means, it's my favorite. In the 17 years I lived in FL, I only evacuated once (Irma). I was in Pinellas county. The media definitely overblows the hurricane dynamic that Floridians live with, and hurricanes are also not to be taken lightly - both of those are true. Tropical Tidbits is a great resource, if you're smart you can make FL residency happen and stay safe. Not sure if you're still down there but you picked a great little area to visit.

Yeah but like I know someone that lives in Key West and has property in other keys and like once every 2-4 years the property gets flooded to unlivable and they lose a car to being flooded

I don't doubt that at all. Elevation anywhere in the keys is in the single digits, usually less than 5 feet. All part of what you sign up for.

It's not that bad if you do it right. My parents have had a second house in the Old Town part of Key West for 35 years. It was built in the late 40's, and it's still going strong. Yes, it's had some storm damage over the years, but nothing major, ever. If I recall there has "only" been like two-three major storms there since they have owned it. A lot of it comes down to exact location, as some areas can flood with a bad thunderstorm, while others, maybe a mile away are bone dry. You need to do your research, and talk to the locals.

Now of course if you live on one of the smaller, thinner Keys, and are right on the water, you could suffer more damage for sure. But even then it's not as bad as some make it out to be. My friend has had a place on Cudjoe Key since 2010. Never had a issue until Irma, which was a direct hit to Cudjoe Key. He had lots of property damage, and his pool was wrecked. But his house made it through with relatively minor damage. A lot of this comes down to home construction and protection when out there.

Yes, there is a risk, but you have to buy right, and insure properly. IMO the risk is worth it it you can swing it. I absolutely love it in the Keys. It is like another world down there. l

When my mom hit 80 we moved her off the Texas coast. Generally because every time a storm hit I was having to go down there to prep and go back to up-prep. I think by the time she moved out she was paying nearly 10k a year in flood, wind, storm and fire insurance. They broke those apart to kind of hide the cost but bundled together it was really more than she could afford.

I reckon in 25 years the only people who can afford to live on the coast will all be hedge fund managers
