My grand conspiracy is that OEM's know people mod their cars, and have been (especially in BMW's case) feeding people the keys to decrypt their ecu's to allow tuning. They even allow/encourage specific mods on their cars and use the general population as test mules for improvements/modifications later on down the pipeline.

I'd even go as far to say that newer car's power creep (we have 1000hp Corvettes!) are finally a little hedge to fight back against tuners by offering a "complete" package.

That's not a conspiracy at all.

Whipple pays Ford for the ability to sell a tune for their ECU to go with their supercharger kits. Whipple is able to bring their product to market months or years before a crack or work around is figured out for other brands. This isn't just them, I'm sure many other companies license thile same way, and the OEMs likely require them to put some sort of indication that they had once tuned the vehicle in for warranty purposes.

Yep, they'll let you crack the ECU while the tracking software logs your VIN, now your warranty can be voided if needed. And if a major lawsuit ever arises, they’ve got that card to play. Sounds like a genius plan
