If I was a doctor maybe I would have said it with more heart when it comes to running over animals. Especially being a vet. Everyday I go to work, some cat or rabbit is in pieces on the road. It doesnt affect a lot of people one way or the other. I'm glad your cat survived, truly.

"If you own a cat and let it go outdoors this is a risk you take - it is not a drivers problem." Is the comment I was referring to. The driver doesnt know if its an outdoor cat or a cat that escaped on accident. Its a drivers responsibility to see if theres a collar on it and call the owner, not drive away or in the case of even bigger assholes above, go back and drive over it again.

Back when I was in college (circa 1976) we had an OSHA safety class and I wish I had the statistics that my instructor put up regarding accidents caused by people trying to avoid furry critters. The numbers were not good. There are an amazing number of bozos that cause a lot of damage, injury and even death to other humans because they don't want to run over a stray cat, squirrel, etc.
Dawgdog's exactly right and that's the same thing I taught my kids. I also add that they need to stay well clear of any moron who has a "I brake for animals" bumper sticker. I guess these twits think that the sticker absolves them of someone elses injury or death as a result of any idiotic maneuver they may make. |

I hate to sound insensitive, but I would probably not worry about it. The cats in our neighborhood don't seem to worry about all the $hit they leave in my flowerbeds...

I guess I have to agree with this statement. On the other hand, you shouldn't regret yesterday. As the saying goes "Life is in you today and you make your tomorrows." So if you feel bad about I'd suggest donating $100, as someone else suggested, to an animal shelter or your local Human Society. That way you'll know your $100 goes toward helping rescue other cats (or dogs).

I was working for a beer company and I just finished a delivery to a bar. I was driving through a neighborhood that was next to the bar. Two dogs came out from behind a very large oak tree chasing each other. I had no chance to stop and hit both of them. The bigger dog got up and ran away. The smaller white dog was not going to be getting up. I walked around the neighborhood and found the owner of the dog. It was an elderly women and she thanked me for letting her know that her dog was in dogie heaven. She gave me a shoe box and I brought her dog back to her.

I have to agree with the don't swerve mentality. I was driving through my girlfriends neighborhood one night and saw something small dart out in he road from my right, so I swerved right to avoid him hoping he would get by me, which he did, but I hit the gigantic dog who was chasing him and happened to be the dog of a friend of mine. Worst thing is, I didn't find out it was his dog till later. It was a rotweiller and took the direct hit of my truck at 25 mph and still ran off. If I had just kept going and not swerved hard, I would have killed a damn racoon, which is really a public service, and not the dog.

I not only agree with the dont swerve philosophy, i dont brake, i dont let off the gas i just drive through it. Once you start braking/steering to avoid it your chances of loosing it, and hurt yourself of some other HUMAN, and no one wants to do that. Oh and another thing, dont be stupid about going back to ID it, if it is too dangerous to get to it (ie too much traffic) just let it be.

hey guys..
(how I hit it), it was walking down the street, as I got closer, it ran a little bit faster, and as I got pretty close, it started running like mad, I initially was able to get out of its way (the front wheels) but then I heard a crack and bump with the back left wheel.... and there it was lying on the ground.... I went back and the cat was still there, I checked to see if there was a collar, but there wasn't one. It looks like someone ran over it the second (or even 3rd time) parts of it looked mushed very badly... Hopefully no one owns the cat, the scary thing was that its eyes were left wide open... not something I really want to post pictures (or take pictures for that matter) for anybody to see... Anyway, I scooped it up and put it in a dumpster... As for the car, no blood no nothing... |

Years ago I terminated the partridge family. Driving at night, and right after been hit by the the glare from a passing car, a column of partridges appeared in front of me: a large one, a slightly smaller one and many, many little ones... I felt like shit for days.
Regardless of your view of the natural world (spiritual or secular), life is an amazing thing. If you don't feel even a little guilty after killing a cat - there is something seriously, deeply wrong with you. |

Your key responsibility is to the owner of the cat. They may search and agonize and grieve without knowing what happened to their pet. Always man up and do your best to find and tell the owner. Phone the local animal shelters (SPCA etc.) with a description. If nothing else, you tried your best and will have a clean conscience.

All I can say is that I wouldn't want to have you as a friend. It sounds like you're pro-death instead of pro-life. From your last two posts in this thread it seems like you'd be the kind of person saying "Ah man, you're fucked. Let me just pop a cap in your brain right now and end it." if your friend was seriously hurt, instead of saying "Dude, don't worry, you'll pull through this. Help is on the way." Seriously, please stop playing all those video games.

I read his response as more of a Kevorkian position. If an organism is with 100% certainty going to die in short order, and the remaining time will be spent in agony, it is humane to put it out of its misery.

Someone hit my cat a couple of months ago. I wish they would have stopped and called me. Instead, she sat in the middle of the road until one of my neighbors noticed. So I have no idea how long she had laid in the middle of the road or if I had gotten there sooner, if there was anything that could have been done. She quit breathing around the time I arrived.
If the cat had identification, you should have contacted the owner, IMHO.
