Denon AVR 2308ci -- any comments?

No, it's not a convertible ...

Denon just released this brand new A/V receiver, which has 1.3a HDMI switching and anolog signal up-converison to 1080p. The price is $850. I'm wondering if someone here has had a first hand experience with this unit or has anything to say about it anyway.

I'm currently in the market for a receiver that has 1.3 HDMI and video upconversion to match with my brand new Paradigm speaker system. (Monitor 9, CC-290, ADP-190).

I have the Pioneer Elite VSX94-THX and it is incredible. I've had Denon's and Onkyo's in the past, but none were better than this.

would you think that the VSX92-THX is pretty comparible to your unit? I heard that Denon receivers produce better sound that the Pioneer.

The VSX92-THX sounds essentially the same as the VSX94-THX. The VSX92 has 130 watts per channel vs. 140 for the VSX94. Other than that they are pretty much the same. I listened to them side-by side versus a Denon AV-2808 and I liked the Pioneer Elites better. But then sound preference is a personal thing. The Denon also sounded quite good to me.

Thanks, I appreciate your help. Do you think that the pioneer has more bells and whistles than the 2808 or are they pretty comparable in that respect? How would you characterize the sound of 2808? more neutral, less punchy, warm, etc.? Do you think 92THX and 2808 are similar with respect to the video performance?

I just noticed the Paradigms in your post. Awesome choice. Now I am really thinking the VSX92-THX might be just the ticket cuz the Paradigm's like lots of nice clean power. Do you have a Seismic 12 sub to go with that? That would make one incredible system. Good luck and enjoy it whichever way you decide to go.

It depends on if your focus is on music or movies. If you like the bright sound like for Classical music, you might like Denon better. Out of all of the adjectives, I guess the warmth fits the Elite best.

Thanks! I think I ordered either Ultracube 10 or Ultracube 12 (whatever was recommended to me at my local audio store).

I hope you went with the Ultracube 12. The difference to me between a 10" and 12" sub is huge and can make or break a home theater.

I just ordered Denon 3808 for the price of 2808 from AudiogoN. Can't wait for it to arrive!

If the price is like $1199, be careful. There are a lot of people selling gray-market AVR-3808's for that price. It may not have the factory warranty.

Denon controls that pretty closely and their authorized dealers are holding pretty tight at $1599.

The 3808 is a nice box though, similar to my VSX-94THX.

I have my doubts that upconverting a cable tv signal to 1080p would work very well

Discussion of this AVR on AVSforums.com:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=910371

The 'official' thread is currently 7 pages; use search function to find other threads that mention this unit.

That site is a great source for AV info.

I just downloaded the manual for the 3808CI today, up to p. 51.

I need something to run 5.1 + whole-house audio, with the future expectation of 7.1+whole house audio. Fairly limited in my choices, without jumping to astronomical prices.
