In an effort not to start an entirely new thread, can anyone explain to me wtf the point is of putting a tinted plastic license plate cover over your license plate is? My 11 yr old asked me today while we were driving to the beach and for the life of me I could not give him a good answer . They look like putting plastic over a couch.

Not sure about the tint, but I thought the plastic cover was to protect your car tags from thieves, which apparently was a thing.

Makes it harder for people to read it when the driver does something naughty, plus it also makes toll booth and police license plate readers not read as accurately. Even clear plate covers are 100% illegal in many states for these very reasons.

I'm sure that one of our resident LEOs will chime in about those plate covers also being probable cause for a traffic stop.....

A good friend of my dad's had a for-real 427 Cobra back in the early '70's. The license plate: "50000"
I assumed that is what he paid for it. He was the same fellow that owned a for-real P-51D Mustang airplane.
