I run my own DNS server on my home network. But you should check out Open DNS. It's free for home users and have a number of security features. If I remember correctly, they offer filtering capabilities and restrictions via white/black lists.

I'm considering setting up Open DNS to strictly monitor my daughter's activities. My firewalls are enterprise grade from Cisco, SonicWall, and Fortinet. But the application/higher level securities features are subscription only. I had them when I was first given the equipment to learn on but the subscriptions have expired. To renew would cost an arm and a leg, I'm not willing to pay when there are free/cheaper alternatives that will be more than adequate for my environment.
