Shop Forman took car home for 4 days

My M3 comp went to shop 3 times in less than month for same issue; they told me they needed to take dash apart and they ordered parts and would take 3/5 days to come in. I was never told anyone would be taking my car anywhere but found out it was taken home by shop foreman for 4 days to his home overnight and put 350 miles on it so I’m not thrilled especially because of the matte frozen paint and white leather. When it came back there were rock chips in front and leather was really dirty. Not really sure if my anger is justified or if I’m just being a Brat.

Why would even question your anger is justified? Of course it is.

One time my SA called and asked for permission for a tech to take it home to diagnose a hard to pinpoint problem, that was understandable, but without permission, NO.

You're joking??? Dude you never authorized this. They need to make this right by fixing the scratches and cleaning the inside. A full detail is in order or the next thing they'd get from me is a letter from my lawyer. F that!!

Talk to the GM and give them the opportunity to make it right. If they don’t, go nuclear.

I'd rip them a new one. 350 miles? That's at least 4 hours of driving around. Why?

was this at a dealership or indy shop?

either way its unacceptable. the shop doesn't need to drive your car around that much to diagnose a rattle. And they shouldn't return a car dirty like that. they could have thrown a cover over the seats while working

It was at a large BMW dealership, actually the dealership we bought it from. They stated they were waiting on parts and I just so happened to check my BMW app and saw it was driving an hour one way to and from his home to dealership for four days. I was never told anything about anyone needing to keep driving it especially after they stated they ordered parts I assumed it would just be sitting in a bay at the dealership. I talked to the service manager and they just stated that sometimes they allow them to take vehicle home to recreate issue. It came back dirty and on the invoice they had to change out the kombi and loosen wiring harness. Also said weird stuff about the key reading 10,000,000 miles and that they now fixed the mileage😳. I told them I’m not taking my car home in that condition until the GM calls me Monday. Just not sure what to ask for in compensation. U can’t touch up the matte paint from what I’m told. Any advice on what to ask them to do?

If I remember correctly, new BMW models store a copy of the vehicle's odometer, maintenance history, and any current/pending fault codes in each key fob. When you drop your car off for service, the advisor waves the key fob in front of a scanner and it fills in all the blanks on the shop work order.

What the above sounds like is that either the odometer data was mis-synchronized with the key fob, or you handed the service advisor a spare key fob that was out of sync or never synched with the car. I'm pretty sure that they just needed to go out to the car and turn it on with that key fob to do a sync and update the odometer reading in the key, and it probably took them longer to write it up on the shop work order than it did to sync the key.....

I gave them the key fob I use daily. They already did system software update etc last time I was in. We bought the vehicle when it had 4000 miles on it and after the first month, I took it in because it was losing power come to find out the original owner had a tuner on it. They removed the tuner and since then I’ve had nothing but problems.

Honestly - if this were me. I would be calling a lawyer. At least to find out what your options are.

In regards to the key fob reading unrealistic mileage. Could the odometer been rolled back by the previous owner? BMW has quite a few modules and each records the mileage. When one tries to roll back the mileage they have to do so within each module in the car. So sometimes a key fob or an auto transmission module may show an abnormal miles count.

There is no point in contacting a lawyer. I would e-mail the stores' GM and explain the situation and you can threaten hiring an hiring within that e-mail.

If I were you, I would ask for the following:

- Full detail using detailer of your choice (ask for $1,000 paid to the detailer or they can write you a check)

- Full explanation why the car travelled 350 miles. Ask what their normal policy is when doing customer test drives

This is some wild shit OP, absolutely wild. I wouldn't calla a lawyer (people watch too many movies) but stay calm, call the GM, see what he says and give him the opportunity to make it right. If he doesn't, then start throwing your weight around.

A few weeks ago I took my wife's car in to get the summer wheels and tyres installed, one wheel was chipped in the install. I recorded the evidence, sent it via email and they had the wheel re-fnished for me so no complaints other than it being a PITA.

Taking it off-property is bad enough.. but 350 miles? Dude didn't joy ride your car, he went on some kind of road trip! Pure insanity. I'd first go to the service manager, civil tone, ask him to investigate.

If he wrecked the car would the dealership replace vehicle no. It would have been on the service advisor. Sounds like somebody does not know how their shop is running.
