Love this time of year...leaves are starting to turn, rate of growth (grass) is finally tempering but the grass is happy with the temps and recovered from summer. Finally getting to walk back from needing to mow twice a week.

I don't know anything about mushrooms. Even researching them I still can't really find a proper match and description. Edible? Poisonous?

How do you grow such a lovely lawn in such a hot climate? And your grass look like nice northern grass, i'd expect texas to have a more sort of australian grass that is more tolerant of heat.

Good irrigation would be my first guess.

It'd cost a bazillion dollars to water that much lawn in texas wouldn't it?

First: Thank you for the compliment! 😊

So, Gardening has been a hobby of mine for over 20yrs. I've definitely had trial and error. And yes, Texas is brutal on landscaping!
So firstly I have a proper irrigation system that I set for optimal moisture. Feeding and airation is also crucial as Lady Jane said. My Garden has been carefully maintained with the correct combination of sand, compost, soil and topping off with mulch to lock in moisture.

70% sure they are honey mushrooms, but don't be fooled by the name, as cases of poisoning have been linked to eating these fungi; this is most probably due to a small but significant proportion of people being adversely affected rather than a universal human reaction to these fungi. It is recommend that this species is not collected for the table.

If you have lots of room for a majestic, beautiful deciduous tree, the tulip tree is just the one you're looking for (Liriodendron tulipifera).

A Tulip Tree? Interesting. I had to Google this to find out more. Definitely not native to Texas. But based on what I read about it's habitat, I can certainly grow it here.
It gets rather large though: 70 - 100ft and a 6ft diameter trunk would require tons of space!
I do love a "flowering tree" though. I have 3 currently: Crepe Myrtle and Red Bud.

Sadly I had to remove a tulip tree at the house we moved into. The tree was still small about 20 ft tall but it was planted only about 8ft away from the house.

Does removing a bunch of grass to expand the vegetable, fruit & herb garden count as a yard freak? That's what my wife and I did this year.

The overboard part is mostly on me. Also, even more overboard because grow bags line portions of the in ground plant areas.

At least I enjoy it!

I really went overboard on our garden this year. So much so that we ran out of room (even after I dug out more of the lawn to plant) to plant so my wife took some of the plants to work & gave them away.

In addition to our usual suspects, (Peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, spinach, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, snap peas & carrots) I not only added a ton more of those usual suspects...I added watermelon, honey dew, cantaloupe, yukon gold potatoes, arugula, new herbs, new lettuce varieties, new pepper & tomato varieties.
I'm insane.
