BMW M inline six and V8 engines to survive for many years to come

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW M straight six and V8 to survive Euro 7 emissions rules

Performance arm’s signature engines will suffer no loss in performance, claims M’s boss

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/t...missions-rules

Although the emissions levels allowed for cars are unchanged from the current Euro 6e regulations, they will be tested over a broader (and harder) range of scenarios said to better reflect real-world driving. They must also remain compliant for 10 years or 124,000 miles, twice as long as currently. Brake and tyre emissions will also be monitored for the first time.

Speaking to Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel said “the challenge was not so much to make an engine that is EU7 compliant”, but to “keep performance”.

"The six-cylinder in-line engine is our legacy, and the V8 has got a long history in racing, so we intend to keep going,” said Van Meel."

Asked whether M would consider downsizing to three- or four-cylinder powerplants with increased electrification to reduce emissions, he simply replied: “No.”

Let’s hope so! I bet the backlash AMG experienced wasn’t lost on them either.

I have a G82 but at this point I really, really couldn’t care less about the new cars. I view it more as “the video game is no longer being updated”, the amount of content out there with all the BMW platforms to truly experience, own and work on them all thus far would take a lifetime already. Just working my way through the campaign.

The “keeping the V8” for a long time to come made me smile.

I’ll gladly drive a car that yields 9.5 MPG. Don’t get rid of v8’s and you’ll keep me as a customer. Well done BMW M

The weak allowed this to happen. From manipulation to self-regulation.

As a result, we do not deserve the best versions of a V8 or V10 engine we can engineer.

Tyre emissions are directed at the EV crowd. Long live the S variant ICE!! The upcoming bifurcation of the M3 platform to EV and ICE should be an interesting one, as not to go off thread topic, but the EV M3 will of course be faster, but will also command a price premium. With the Big Beautiful Bill axing EV incentives for non US manufactured cars, should be an interesting up take for the EV variant. Frank van Meel et al realize that EV momentum is having a hard brake prior to the turn in for the US market, and why ICE needs to stay around for years to come.

hmmm, it's a common understanding that a small engine adds lagg while spooling, no?? To my understanding, even the electro forced turbo's aren't delivering the same effect (e.g. Porsche GT3 still preferred in ALL reviews, T-hybrid coming close, but still lacking).
