Does it matter?
6MT is ancient and inadequate for the torque from modern BMW I6 and V8 engines. It's "walking dead". I won't. That would be a stupid inefficient engine. Even Alpina B10 4.6 V8 gets 20-21 mpg. Why would anyone wish for Detroit 70s-era inefficiency?!? Give me new, more powerful, and more efficient I6's, V8's and EV motors. I want one of each! a

When I had my ‘18 Merc c63s I drove it in sports+ mode in the city(I didn’t know what efficient mode was). Probably averaged 14 mpg’s in the city. I’m sure my ‘21 m5 comp is probably a little better on the mpg’s but who cares? Are you really buying an M or AMG for fuel efficiency

It’s like a breath of fresh air to hear about continuation of I6 & V8, but I’m concerned that both these power plants will be hybridized over time, to improve emissions!
This leads to more complexity, thereby potentially decreasing reliability & more expensive to repair, forget about DIY! As battery costs continue dropping, EVs might get cheaper & might sell more as they could be considered relatively less complex compared to ICE engines which would keep getting more complex in response to stricter emission regulations! Just a perspective.. |

Most of them will be mild hybrid though, not like the heavyweight champion G9x. G84 M3 will be S58 with mild hybrid powertrain.

So a car has to comply with even more stringent test and regulations whereas a ships and planes can just get away with polluting freeley at much higher amounts, these regulations are a joke! But it’s good BMW are standing firm

Kudos to BMW for letting the customer choose.
I fully expect BEVs to eventually dominate the market, especially in Europe and China. The trend over the last few years is very obvious and persists even after politicians have stopped pushing hugely generous EV subsidies. But there are places where they're just not a good option (yet), as well as customers who will be happy to pay extra to keep driving an ICE, whether because of nostalgia or other reasons. BMW continuing to service those segments instead of trying to placate the "net zero" crowd is something I fully support. |

Yeah I bet they will be cancelled because no one buys them. NOT because an ill thought move driven by ill thought regulation (we all want EVs, now we all dont want EVs, probably we all do want EVs much later on when they are cheaper to buy, run, own etc and when realistic engine sounds are a thing that makes no body cares about ICE engine due to its downsides).
So yeah, makes sense to keep making them if they are clean. And do mass market stuff cheap to own and as little polluting as possible, whatever it is.

There are manual transmissions out there than can take a ton of power. BMW would need to design one or leverage an existing Tremec. The stock transmission is actually pretty strong with the right clutch. BMW could 100% do it easily.

Right before having my ‘25 M3 G81, I drove an X5 M60i for a year. It had the S68 V8 powerplant with some mild hybrid goodies The switch makes the S58 feel ancient in some respects (auto start stop for example); and interestingly fuel efficiency is almost the same, despite the displacement, weight and form factor differences. This last thing blows my mind, frankly

Whats Tesla Plaid displacement? Or Taycans for that matter? Even though you or I may not like it that claim is no longer valid. Tuned M3s with inline six tend to be faster then tuned M5s with V8.

Precisely. The best way to teach companies to produce what the consumer wants is to refuse to buy products that fail to provide what the consumer wants. People voted with their wallets and refused to buy new AMG products and BMW certainly took notice and isn’t going to repeat the same failed experiment.

I’m one VERY happy M5 owner. Others report better mileage. But I drive my car first and foremost responsibly and VERY enthusiastically. As a proper M car should be owned and driven.

I wonder when regulators will wake up and realize that creating catastrophic conditions in some parts of the world mining lithium, cobalt and tantalum, just to clean up other parts of the world with EVs - doesn’t make sense.
