FIA Changes Lap Rule Due to Near-Crisis for Verstappen
👉 The FIA has amended the rules governing how lapped cars can unlap under the Safety Car, issuing the update ahead of the Miami GP.
🔎 The Incident: During a Safety Car period at the Australian GP (approximately lap 41), lapped Ollie Bearman was allowed to unlap. Taking advantage of that opportunity, Bearman immediately pitted for tires. However, upon exiting the pit lane, he rejoined the track just ahead of P3 Verstappen,who was running behind the Safety Car. This caused confusion for Verstappen and his team about the correct procedure and whether Bearman should remain in that position until the race restart.
✏ The Solution: The rule now specifies that lapped drivers must rejoin at the end of the line. Crucially, Race Direction now has the discretion to close the pit exit while the SC train (including the leader) is passing through the pit entrance/exit.
This would prevent a car that splits and enters the pits (as Bearman did) from exiting again in front of another car, preventing the confusion seen.
