My big boy Cayman was diagnosed last year with kidney failure. He made an awesome effort to almost make 10 years old and only missed it by 2 months.
He will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge tomorrow evening. There will be many of his brothers waiting to welcome him.
I’m going to miss my big boy.

So sorry to hear it. Somewhere is a saying to the effect of: the price of being grieved is to have been loved so dearly. Know that Cayman lived a good life and will be playing with his brothers, waiting to reunite with you some day.

Cayman has passed. We stopped at Dairy Queen on our way to the Vet. He got a hamburger, fries. and a cup of vanilla soft ice cream. He ate everything at the park and he was loving the ice cream. Thank you all for the support and kind comments.

That’s a nice way to remember your boy. We did that as well when we had to put our cat to sleep. Did many things on that last day to make him happy. Also makes for a cherished memory.

Sorry for your loss.

RIP Cayman

Every single day. I don’t get it. Why not choose the size appropriate bed? Just a couple of nuckle heads.

Sorry to hear man. That’s rough. Just saw this thread and this post hits home for me. My dog became lethargic all of a sudden after a check up at the vet this past Wednesday. Did a blood transfusion and such at an emergency place per recommendation. He’s still lethargic and not eating much (mainly drinking water). We’re hoping it’ll pass and he’ll have more time with us, but we don’t know. Just taking it day by day. I’ve been really sad and cried over it. Have had him 15 years.

Been going back and forth whether to have euthanasia at home or at the vet, and communal cremation or private. I don’t think we want an urn with his ash. We probably want to spread it somewhere like the beach (took him there a bunch of times and he liked it - and car rides). Hoping for the best but not sure how long he has. His brother will miss him for sure. We got them both at the same time.

Sorry to hear your buddy is having issues. I hope and pray he gets better. We always get a private cremation. I have 4 urns with all my Rottweiler ashes. My youngest Rotty Bimmer seems to be withdrawn and depressed. He is getting a lot of attention as you can imagine. I think he will be fine. My wife doesn't want 2 Rotties at a time anymore but we shall see. I took this picture of Bimmer yesterday.

Aww. That’s a big boy! I hope Bimmer gets well soon. It can be tough missing his pal.

Can you share the thought process behind keeping an urn and ashes? I go back and forth on that.

It's just something I have aways done. They were my Best friends and I feel they deserve a private cremation. We have all the urns ( nice wooden box ) on a shelf together. When we die the plan is to have the urns placed in our coffins. The wife is Greek Orthodox and they don't believe in being cremated.

We have urns with the ashes of our first two and also clipped some of their fur to keep in a small zip bag near the urn. They are in a curio cabinet in the living room. We found it comforting to feel like they are always with us. But that’s not to say it is right or wrong - just what we chose to do.

<rant mode on>

For the past two mornings, my DW's pre-sunrise walks with OCD psycho dog have been interrupted by two stray pure black german sheperds. No collars visible, and definitely not from anyone on our dead-end road in the woods. She called animal control this morning, but like everything else in our sleepy town they are a part-time service.

Long story short, they caught the two dogs down our road late this afternoon. One was a female, the other appeared to be a maturing male pup of hers. Both were skinny and starving, and didn't give any resistance whatsoever to the animal control person who gave them food.

It appears that they were someone's pets, and the bastages must have dumped them on our road. They obviously could not fend for themselves in the wild, and probably would not lived another week if my DW didn't call for the puppy paddy wagon.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS TO POOR ANIMALS?????

We spent 20 years on a dead-end dirt road on a rural property in So. NH, and the best cat we've ever had came to us under this same circumstance. We were so lucky to have him. He trained two subsequent pairs of cats and just basically took care of the business that rural furballs are hired to do.

Our local cat-only vet told us that cats like him, whether feral or not, generally lasted only two years living outside in that environment. Winters were not to be trifled with up there. Bob had his own heated kennel and could come and go as he pleased. He appeared to be as happy out there as he was when we let him into the house. He truly was a cat's cat.

In answer to your question, I think there are people who are simply too uninformed and/or without the resources to be responsible pet owners. They don't understand what it means to be a pet owner, they can't afford it (esp. today), and they dump their pets in a way that works best for them. I've always hoped it's something they won't do again.

Bob, Earning His Keep (btw, I watched Chip and Dale as a kid and enjoyed that more than the other cartoons. I still like chipmunks. The wife, however, had vast flower gardens, and that was it for the chipmunks, the voles, and the moles. So we ended up with a small herd of cats doing rodent duty.)

Last day. He was in the family for 15.5 years. Just a house cat much loved and taken care of through illnesses and surgeries. His heart failed yesterday.
