I thought this was in the little book that you had to study to get your permit?

Last time that I checked, there was no requirement for being able to read in order to get a drivers license!

I would really like to see an official report on the literacy rate for long-haul truck drivers, since my personal experiences make me think that 5% of them cannot read.....

You are right though, last time I looked they just check your pulse.
It's way too easy to get a driver's license in this country, that's why we have so many idiots on the roads.

Some time ago my high school GF's best friend failed the driving test twice, she somehow managed to pass on the 3rd try.......

....a week later she totaled a car daddy bought her. True story.

I could be wrong but don't you still have to take a written test which would require reading?

^^ Just looked. There are two tests required to earn your driver's license in all 50 states—the written exam and the road test.

But the written test can be administered orally.

Yes, and not in a Monica Lewinsky sorta way. You can also have a translator there in NY to read the stuff to you.

Note that the book is available in hundreds of languages, but all of the signs explaining how to navigate a traffic circle are in English.....
