If I am being harsh, not that I have a reputation for that, none of those costs should be unexpected. 20 year old washer, gazillions of miles on an old car...... these are expected costs.

OP, I feel your pain. Adulting is hard. I swear every month some big expense seems to creep. Seriously, it's like 'even Steven' with how consistent our monthly costs are. We'll be doing good and thinking, we spend $2K less than last month and then BAM, something expensive breaks.

As for Subarus, I must be extremely lucky. My wife and I have owned four of them; 1998 Legacy 2.5 GT wagon, 2007 Outback LL Bean 2.5i, 2012 WRX hatch, and a 2015 Outback 3.6R. None of these cars had major issues and none required head gaskets. between the four cars, there was around 400K miles. We still have the 2015 Outback which is my teenage daughter's car now. I had to do new halfshafts, starter (I rebuilt it), and valve cover gaskets on the LGT, nothing on the 2007 Outback, and nothing on the WRX. The 2015 has needed a HVAC blower motor ($50 and 20 minute install) and a driver's lower seat cover as the vinyl/leather tore (needs to be replaced AGAIN, cheap ass vinyl). That's it other than typical maintenance.

"Happens to us all," truer words have not been said, if you're a home owner and/or a car owner. There's going to be expenses, and sometimes when it rains it pours.

Look on the bright side - it failed on you, not your daughter.
You know how to manage this issues, she would not have.

BTW, why were you planning to give your daughter a 200+K beater for college? Cars that old require constant maintenance to stay on the road, adn that will be the last problem she needs to have in college!

You've just completely lost me - went for a luxo truck over a sports sedan?!?!

Sorry but the above two claims are mutually exclusive.

Good luck either way!

I recently had to repair a blown engine ($40k+), 2 new sets of tires (almost $5K), new M rotors ($3K), a bunch of little but expensive M repairs, and replace the washer and dryer as well! Total was approaching $60K. So, maybe that cheers up your day as it could be a lot worse.
Yeah, you're right. Had to go to the doc yesterday and got some bad news as well, so I was on a hair trigger, sorry about that.

It can always be worse. BTW, I hate those dog commercials. Sorry I was such an ass.

Meanwhile, I have a Crosstrek loaner from the dealership. $39K and has worse NVH than my 20 year old Forester. Vegan inside, uncomfortable seats, and no ass under the hood whatsoever.

No, no no, RX 500H F Sport Performance "Black Line" - I have more titanium in my body than the hot section of a GE turbofan engine, so need an SUV.

Regarding the car for the daughter, she lives 15 miles from college. So a disaster strikes, it's close.

Also $20k for a new deck and buying a nice car when you have aged appliances and aged cars in the driveway is interesting- do you live in a very rural area OP? If youre mechanically inclined - could you and a friend not have knocked out the deck? Appliances come in all prices if you dont mind a dent in the back etc….
I live out in the country NE of Cincinnati.

The thing about old cars and other items are that they are paid for. And so you can put your $ elsewhere.

I am a 100% disabled combat vet. So I can't do the deck and things like that any longer. Just physically can't. Plus, the deck is 15 ft in the air and failed structurally because Warren County allowed the builder to install it without meeting code. We didn't expect to replace it - it's 9 years old. But builder constructed it out of untreated lumber and used 3 4X4 columns where he should have used 4 6X6 columns. I've stained it and cleaned it 3X, but this past winter, the snow loads were too much for the columns.

I am extremely mechanically proficient, just getting older and it hurts to do it.

I've been asked several times about "why am I buying a BMW?" My total income allows for it. I have a house payment and one credit card.

Many here were quick to judge, kind of making light of the situation just for fun, but sorry to hear about your injury brother and do appreciate your service. I try to live my life in a way that would make Vets proud to serve. My friend on his 2nd forrestor is also a vet, he's about 35 though. He's a successful small biz owner here in a well known biz in town and a great guy.

Up in NC the subaru's are literally everywhere, and for good reason I am sure. We own all 3 of our cars too, I'm a big believer in cash only. Have a great day, hopefully the finances go back to where they were before this mess soon!

I said jeez why do I have so many notifications and forgot I even posted Thanks for the laughs from the responses. It will be interesting to make the change from a M50i to the 2024 with 30k+ miles on it. I read company policy and no bumper stickers. Unfortunately.

Sorry to the OP for my random inserts. Hope things start to get better! It sucks when everything hits at once. Hang in there.

No, my wife has secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and is homebound.

Sorry to hear about your issues. That's rough.

Regarding my original rant, I'm far over it. The issue was that everything hit at once. The $ will be back in savings by next week.

Much appreciated!

I am in KY on a job at the moment and seeing lots of homeless vets for some reason. Sad to see.

Absolutely brutal to witness - I would like to start a non profit that serves them.

Very sorry to hear about your wife as well. Life is so unfair at times.

I get the frustration. We have an emergency fund, but it still sucks to have to fork over large chunks of money out of the blue, especially when you start to think of what it could have been used for. I'll pay a lot of money for a carbon fiber mountain bike or a nice pistol, but $500 for a water heater stresses me the hell out lol.

My wife was out of town Friday with her Lexus, which has 21" wheels. She ripped the inside of the sidewall driving accidentally over a curb in an unfamiliar parking lot of a restaurant. 4 hours from home, and no one within 120 miles had any 21" tires available. She drove home on the donut, stressed the whole way because it was so far. We made the decision to replace the stoopid 21's with 19" aftermarket wheels and tires for about $2,100. But the peace of mind will be worth it.

I have long contemplated getting 22's for my vehicle for the summer, but now I think I'll stick with the 20's even though they don't look as good.

Adulting is hard, hang in there my friend and thank you for your service. To lighten things up, I look like someone who would drive a Subaru (birkins, high socks, hairy, none of my clothes ever match) and I drive a Marina Bay Blue X5 M60i. Its always funny when I step out of it because people typically expect a high class woman but nope, just this guy. Haha.
