+1. The last time we had any sort of large earthquake that caused massive damage was 18 years ago, when the 7.3 mag earthquake struck. While I agree that we are "due" for another big one, I see no reason to not live here. Why the hell would anyone want to live in the gulf coast, especially NO, when the threat of deadly hurricanes are knocking on your door every year? Aside from the earthquakes here, the only other sort of natural disaster we experience on this coast is the wildfires, and some minimal flooding.

I'll take earthquakes over hurricanes and tornadoes. When I lived in Hawaii, we had many tidal wave warnings caused by earthquakes near Alaska. Those were pretty scary too.

California can't afford a big earthquake, literally.

We'll all just have to wait and hope for the best. These mini-quakes have been getting everyone on alert lately and the big one in Eureka doesn't help either. haha

yea i live in arcata like 5 miles north of eureka and the dam thing woke me up... i was laying in bed and felt a lil shake then looked over and saw my flat screen start to sway along with everything else in my dam house.... im from jersey and earthquakes aren't so common you could say and from just waking up and the constant shake i thought we were getting bombed for a second than realized i live in california now and it was just a quake.... was without power for a few hours and the mall is still closed today due to the quake cause i guess the jewelry case at sears exploded and tv's fell and light fixtures all over the mall started coming down... my friend said he saw the ground start to roll... wish i was fully awake for the dam thing!

So the last few days I've been feeling these tiny quakes (almost small enough that you can't feel but big enough to kinda give you a little shake/slip if you're sitting in your bed). I felt another one this morning while sleeping (maybe around 4 or 5AM). It kinda rumbled a bit and woke me up. Then just a few hours ago I felt a little roll again (very small but the window was shaking a bit). I really don't have a good feeling about this. With all the earthquakes we've had (6.5 off the coast of Eureka, 7.0 in Haiti, and a few small ones around here), I'm a bit uneasy.

Now, when I say right conditions...I mean a wooden structure, new building on rollers, outside in the open, etc, cause as we all have seen with the Haiti quake, the wrong structures = bad result. Bottom line, mother nature always wins. |

Yeah that's what I said about the 2012 stuff. I mean there really is nothing any of us can do. However, it does raise some concern. Moving isn't gonna help either. haha I mean unless there is a guarantee, who's to say that it's not gonna happen where I move to.

i've lived in southern california for over 10 yrs and i can only remember about 3 earthquakes that were newsworthy. the most damage done were items falling off of shelves. also, the modern buildings are built now to withstand 6 - 7 magnitude earthquakes. mudslides, forest fires and riots after the lakers win the championship cause more damage here than earthquakes...knock on wood.
