^^ So I guess your "Location: Ramstein Air Base, Germany" is quite OK? But you're right, OPSEC only applies to contingency locations and is of zero importance at well established overseas locations!!! You should practice what you preach.

^^^And that right there is proof that no one, in fact, does this training. OPSEC isn't about keeping every little bit of information from getting out. It's about protecting unclassified information that when combined with other unclassified information becomes classified.

My location, in and of itself, is not a cause for concern. Nor would saying I was deploying. Now if I said I where I'm stationed, where I'm going and when I'm going, then yes, there would be a problem. Facebook and MySpace are perfect examples. People on there are constantly putting departure dates and times. Some even count down the days until they leave. Others give mission details and on and on and on.

From information in this thread alone and looking at member profiles it would not be difficult to find out a member's name and duty location and coupled with the timeframes and deployed locations we'd have a pretty good idea about a personnel movement. It just snowballs from there.

Do you see the difference?

Being a former security manager I'll chime. You can say you're deployed, no issues. Everyone knows we're in Iraq and Afghanistan. But you shouldn't say I'm deployed with 3/2 SBCT, 1-23IN, at JSS Sadr City to the general public online.

You can say you're deploying in a month. Just don't say I'm deploying with 2-75 Ranger Regiment to Afghanistan on 15FEB10 at 2010 from McChord.

Keep it general and keep unit names and destinations out of it. Protect our capabilities and troop movements. That is all.

Oh, and for OP. I just got back from my second tour and getting ready for my third in 11 months

A BIG THANK YOU for defining and giving a great examples of OPSEC. Pencil pushing admins are the worst when it comes to this.

Not for nothing Quality, but I bet I have a general idea of what unit you are in based off your signature and profile as opposed to some of these men here who give a broad, not specific, departure date for a known theater of operations. Out of curiosity what rank are you? I don't want to sound offensive, but you sound like an E4.

Well then I guess someone should punish the Pentagon and all the news outlet for letting the world know that Fort Hood is sending an Aviation Brigade with 500 support troops in the coming months. Reality is, no specific dates or special (privilege) information has been leaked. Even military policy, rules, regulation, and tradoc are routinely updated. There is nothing anyone said here that hasn't been said on Fox, CNN, Army times and all the other publications out there. I'm no intel guy, but I know enough to realize our military is flawed in itself when it comes to information like this. Then again what do I know? I'm just an 11B3. That's Army term for 0311 in the Marines.

I just showed this thread to my division information assurance NCOIC who said the OP isn't violating OPSEC. Individuals are free to describe the fact that they are being deployed and approximate duration, just not their unit and deployment dates. radix, are you Air Force?

No, but I spent 8 years in intelligence in the marines. Four as a 2631, and another four as an 0231. I disagree with your NCOIC due to the fact that he did for all intents and purposes post the date to within seven days and the exact duration. The precise unit may or may not be able to be figured out, and I'm not going to bother trying to dig deeper, but I'm pretty sure he's coming out of Nellis. FWIW, it wasn't the OP I was talking about. Anyhow, I've laid out my reasoning, I'm going to let my end of this debate die now.

It takes more than a discussion where some people disagree with me to hurt my feelings. I'm an E-5 (for just a bit longer anyway). I have however been doing OPSEC and security for almost 5 years. I know that's not as long as some people but it doesn't take that long to get spun up on either. Just like hands in pockets (or Air Force gloves as most other services call them) it's more about getting people to actually do it that's the problem.

Just curious, what unit do you think I'm with? My signature is nothing but info about my car and I don't think there's anything in my profile either.

OPSEC/COMSEC guys are way to paranoid about shit that's already been published in the papers and reported on CNN.

I did plenty of contracting support after I got out of the Corps, best friend is in Iraq right now and my ex-wife will be there later this year. So what? All that info was published in multiple newspapers along with much more specific details.

Refresh yourself with appendix A please. Any OSINT monkey (I was an ELINT guy) could figure out that since MVF4Rrider lives in Las Vegas that he is more than likely stationed at Nellis AFB or perhaps Fallon NAS. This tells me that some some sort of air unit is being deployed to Afghanistan within one week for a duration of 6 months. This tells me:
sorry but you're making a lot of assumptions here. he could be in any unit on any station. he could be a reservist, or even a recruiter.

I was in Iraq in 05/06, ordered my 335i while I was there. It's a good opportunity to save money and get a discount on a car. I'm getting ready to go to OCS but I'm sure I'll be back over soon and hopefully order an M5 from there this time.
