Left for college at 18 and never came back even though I was only 45 minutes from home. I loved my parents, but I was done living under their roof. When I graduated college in 1999, it was frowned upon that any child be living at home after they're turn 20 or so. You'd be viewed as a bit of a loser.

Hmmmm.... technically 19 when I left for college (I believe I started school a year later because of my bday or some nonsense). However I left my parents house and lived with my grandmother for a year or two while going to college and then my uncle got sick and went to live with my grandmother so I moved to my parents condo in Miami Beach pretty much until like 2006 when I bought a condo right before the 2008 crash. So while I moved out of my parents at 19 I didn't really have my own place until like 23-24.
If my grandmother wasn't close and/or they didn't have that condo I would have probably lived in the school housing. I actually wanted that as all my friends were there and the school was like an hour away from my grandmothers and condo. |

Before I turned 19. Finished vocational school, got a job, and then moved out.

Interesting how there seems to be a set age for one to move out from their parent's home.
In cultures where tight family units are emphasized, it's not unusual for adult children to stay in the parent's home well into their 30s (particularly men) until they're married. And even then, there are times the married couple will live in the husband's parental home; eventually taking over the home when the parents pass. This is very true with Asian cultures. I didn't move out of my parent's home until I was 28 when I bought a townhouse. I spent that time paying down debt and positioning myself to be able to purchase my first home. The other reason was that I was having problems with my mom and it was really the best for me to move out when I did which I think started the healing process between us. I started this thread to find out when forum members actually moved out of their parent's home, not for you tell us all what we should do. Everybody has a different story and a different situation. 25 is the right answer for some, but not for others.
What's your story? |

In a nutshell: Sixteen when I started living in a dorm in college. Seventeen when I bought my first condo because dorm living was not for me and my parents were transferred to RCAF Cold Lake, northern Alberta. So, commuting from Victoria BC was not practical. Then off to Germany after graduation for five years working as a civilian nurse for the military.

The day I turned 18. Had a good job and a great place to live. Went with my father to the ID office on Kadena and switched from "dependent" to GS9 that morning. 👍🏻 Govt. rules wouldn't allow the switch while I was 17 as we were overseas.

My answer is probably going to skew the statistics some, since I'm in my 60's and technically never moved out of my parental units' house. I came home one day from work when I was in my early 20's, and my entire family had moved out of the house and left me behind! Rented the house from them with a signed lease and everything for a few years until they sold it, and then moved out of "my" house.....

I moved out at 19. I joined the Army national guard at 18, and after training I attended college full time and worked full time. I was allowed to live at home rent free while I was in college. However my mother wanted me out, I was the last of 9 children. She started charging me rent and increasing it until I met a girl and moved out.
My father missed me, and after my mom passed away from cancer, he was begging me to move back home. It was sad, but I resisted, stayed shacking up with my girl at the time. I was also hitting the bars some nights, so my days were long and sleep short. I was offered the chance to go to West Point, chosen by our senator, but I declined and stayed in local college. My mother was furious at me for doing that, hence she kept raising rent to get me to move out lol. My brother moved back in with my dad until dad passed away, which was very nice of him. |
