When I first was getting my license I remember worrying about this some (80's) - IIRC they were just putting in the computerized ticket system with time stamps, but it might have already been in place a while. I was glad that the combo of constitutionalists and general mob pressure kept it from happening, but in the era of brutal speed traps it seemed like a no-brainer to tag you for an obvious speeding infraction (unless you were in a heavily modded Delorean, covering 120 miles in 70 minutes does clearly indicate some illegal action). At the time they were doing everything else devious to get people (aircraft, visual spotters, unmarked cars, radar units they could set to fake mode, etc), so it seemed plausible. It did keep much of my auto hijinx on the mountain roads, rather than high-speed runs on the highway (and cause for a little bit of highway fun running blocker/bait-car for some of those East-to-West-Coast 'rallys').

This is the story of how i got 5 tickets in one week.
Back from deployment, a gang of us end up at the lake. Girl riding back home with me. Weewoo. Speeding, not wearing a seatbelt. My passenger had never been pulled over or had a ticket before, freaking out, told the cop. Cop gave her a no seatbelt ticket…fined $1. My no seatbelt fine? $120. Dick. Get to the house, grab a roommate and drive from kansas to florida in 20 hours to see the fam. Arrive at dad’s house; get back on the road to finally pick up the kids. Weewoo. Speeding and not wearing a seatbelt. 30 over but the FHPman lets me go after pleading “just got home, havent seen my kids, etc etc.” $300 ish speeding fine plus whatever the seatbelt was. Back to kansas, determined not to ever get caught speeding again. Topekas finest in front of me as i enter town. “Haha, not gonna get me” as i set my cruise control to 65. Cop in front doing less than 65, i pass anyways. Weewoo. Following too closely. $80 fine. Dick. I paid all the fines and took the drivers courses in kansas because i had a kansas license; but apparently i still had an active florida one also.. to which all the tickets were also sent. Couple of years later i discover that i still had a/my florida license is suspended for too many points. More fines, more drivers courses. All while applying to a federal law enforcement job. Im amazed i made it to 40. |

I have a few noticeable incidents:
about 2 weeks after I got my license, this was probably 2009 I was 17. I got pulled over going 70 in a 50 in a 1989 F150. I got stopped near my house and my mom was coming home from work and saw. She asked the cop why I got pulled over lmao. It worked in my favor I think cause the cop saw how pissed she was and made some comment to the effect of how he thought I'd be in trouble at home, and only wrote me a seatbelt ticket which was no points and cheaper. Got pulled over going ~95 at midnight on the PA turnpike in my Infiniti Q60, I was in the middle of a 3 hour trip going home from visiting my long distance gf and I had work the next day. That cop was pretty chill as well and gave me a break. Pulled over going maybe 90 on the NJ Turnpike, Christmas day 2019. The only time I've been pulled over with someone else in the car, my gf had never been stopped before and was freaking out. However the cop just took a look at my license, gave it back, and told me to take it easy. No ticket/warning at all. I had even made a comment (before getting pulled over) that "oh I can speed a bit its the NJ turnpike on Christmas day, even if I get pulled over I won't get a ticket" so i felt good about that prediction Most recently (about 6-7 months ago) I got clocked at 102 in a 65 w/ the M240i and the cop (MA Statie) was not so understanding, I got like 4 fucking tickets and he wrote the exact speed on the ticket lol. Just had to take a class and my insurance only went up a couple % surprisingly. Now I take it easy though cause I really can't get pulled over any time soon Last edited by erotam92; 07-08-2025 at 09:35 AM.. |

From today's 'news':
The state of Florida is attempting to crack down on the problem of drivers substantially exceeding the speed limit and performing stunts behind the wheel. House Bill 351, “Dangerous Excessive Speeding,” became law at midnight on July 1. The law, which imposes higher penalties for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 50 mph or hitting at least 100 mph, was put to the test only two minutes after it went live when a driver was clocked running 104 mph in a 70 mph zone, classifying him as a “super speeder.” Is it just me, or does calling perps 'super speeders' make you want to do it even more? And on a tangent, the story also had this about the child's death that initiated the law: He recounted the story of 11-year-old Anthony Reznick, who on the morning of Feb. 10, 2022, was struck and killed on a Sunny Isles Beach crosswalk by a driver who had been issued more than two dozen traffic citations and had her license suspended multiple times. The woman who killed Reznick, Samentha Toussaint, was driving without insurance. Her headlights weren’t on, Pizzo said, and she was driving at roughly 85 mph in a residential area. A judge suspended her license for eight years, ordered her to pay a $1,000 fine and court costs, and required her to perform 120 hours of community service. She was never criminally charged. WTF is going on that this doesn't bring criminal charges? Classic case of 'enforce the laws you already have, rather than drumming up new ones'. |

When I was 16-17 I did some amazingly stupid stuff behind the wheel, and I agree that facing the consequences -- both with the law and at home with my dad -- contributed to making me a safer driver.

I had a 90 300ZXTT for about 15 years. I needed to sell it, but just could not due to it being the perfect balance of comfort and power to me.
I was heading home from the movies about 11pm one night and as I approached a right hand 90 the light turned green so I didn't have to stop. As I turned the corner I goosed it a little on the empty 4 lane road and the tail came around just a shade as planned and right as it straighten out - I notice 2 cops sitting in a closed Mazzio's parking lot right across from me. I laugh knowing what is about to happen and start eyeballing my parking lot to pull into. As I see one pull out with no lights, so I go ahead and slide into a lot and rolled my dark windows down to wait. He pulls in and then hits his lights and as he walks up goes "Good evening.....how....." and this is when he gets to the door and leans down and see me and then laughs and says "Hey - I expected a kid! How old are you???" and I say 40 or whatever I was at the time and added "Old enough to know better!" He is about my age and laughs as he looks at my license and see's my CCW stamp on it and goes "CCW huh? So what do you carry?" I tell him but say I am not packing it tonight and he says "well you were at a crowded movie theater - why would you NOT carry it???" I agree with him I probably should have been and he hands my license back to me and says "OK - we are trying to keep a handle on the kids, but guys our age need to let off a little steam sometimes, but keep it down ok?" I laugh and say "you bet" and he leaves me to my night. Not only do I get out of the C&I ticket I deserved - I get reprimanded for NOT having a gun in the car. Made my week.

I was maybe 24 at the time and went to visit a dancer at this gentlemans club I used to frequent in the Hartford CT area. Myself and a friend of mine were driving together in my altima up I-91 from New Haven. As we are driving up maybe about 15 minutes into our drive my friend starts telling me to slow down as there are a lot of troopers in the area. I didnt listen really because I was dumb and because we were running late. The place was gonna close within an hour of us getting there.
I was cruising at maybe 70-75 in a 55mph zone and all of a sudden I see lights and hear sirens on behind me and I proceeded to get pulled over by a trooper. My friend was pissed because we had some "stuff" on us and he started getting nervous. The cop walks up to my window and just asks for my license, reg, and proof of insurance and while I hand it to him he says "dont worry guys im not gonna Jam you up im gonna be one of those cool cops, just slow it down and have a nice night". My friend was dead quiet and as soon as the cop walked away and got back in his cruiser and drove off my friend just says "you are sooooo freaking lucky idk how you do it". It was a friday night and I def had at least 2 beers. I count my blessing and only speed if im stone cold sober and take drinking and driving a lot more seriously in my 30's. One more, I was 17 at the time and driving my riced out SE-R Spec V wannabe aka a base model sentra lol. I was cruising down 25 heading toward bridgeport from Trumbull. As I merge onto 25 (its dark and raining) I see a car just pull up behind me and I was doing 70 in a 55. All of a sudden he starts riding my ass really hard with no red and blue lights or anything and it was an unmarked car. I get nervous because well its Bridgeport CT So I speed up to 90-95ish and he continues to ride my bumper hard and finally puts on his lights and sirens. I Pull over and he comes out in his rain poncho and he says "what was that back there" I tell him "im sorry but I honestly didnt know you were law enforcemenet I thought you were just some person trying to follow me or bully me and got nervous so I began to speed" he looked at me and said "fine since you were honest with me and its raining out I will just write you a ticket for travelling to fast for weather conditions but if I really wanted to I could put you in handcuffs right now for reckless driving" and when he said that last part he could see the fear in my 17 year old face so he just smirked and just said wait right here. He came back and gave me a ticket and I was on my way.
