I viewed P-38's as throwaway items, as I did the Lucky Strikes. I was a Marlboro man myself. One thing I did bring back, and still have to this day is my trusty NAV issue TL-29 knife. I got mine in 1966. I didn't use the blade very much but the screw driver was used daily. Military aircraft of the day were covered in screws used to gain access to various compartments and bays. These knives were also provided to other branches, so if you were in the Military you probably had one too. Mine was made by Camilo of New York. The belt pouch is made of parachute harness Nylon by our squadron Parachute Rigger (a friend). He also made a parachute bag for me from the same material which I still use when going away for a few nights informally (aka track luggage).

I just wish that I had held up as well as these things.

I saw a beat up old Ford Pinto in a parking lot this morning. I can't believe it's still on the road.

This was beat to shit; dented, rusted... It looked like one of the original models, that's like 50 years old.

Think my wife's was a 1974, or maybe '73. Her father owned a Ford repair shop and helped her pick it out. Suicide by dad. lol

I learned to “drive” a manual transmission in a yellow Pinto. I was too young to drive, so I sat in the passenger seat and did the shifting while my dad drove and operated the clutch.

It was a 1965 VW Bug for me. Down shifts from 3rd to 2nd took a bit of finesse, and getting it into reverse was different. Years later, while sitting in a Discount Tire, I watched a kid that worked there try for several minutes to get an old Bug in reverse before I went over and told him he needed to push the shifter down.

I hadn’t thought about that in a while. I remember when it was very common to push the shifter down to get into reverse.

To this day, you still must push down to find reverse on most VW's...like my 2019 Golf "R".

I think my 1975 Opel Manta you also had to push down.

Everyone called it the Bumblebee. It had a black fiberglass antenna off the trunk.

I learned to drive stick in a 1968 BMW 1600, which I later smashed head-on into a tree. (Pic is not that very car, but it is the same color.)
