As of today, I am retired..

I figure 33 years in Higher ed is enough. Time to kick back for a bit.

Congrats - if you've got a decent pension then definitely enjoy the remainder of your years - never know how many we've got.

Same here...assuming my health remains good anyways. I was hoping freedom 55, but I think that's a pipe dream at this point.

The Teachers State retirement system for Texas (TRS) provides 2.3 percent gross for each year you are in the system, so after 33, my gross will be 75.9 percent of my before retirement gross. And considering iv been putting about 1/4 of my salary in a 403B for 8 years, this will be gravy..

And I turn 56 this month (little more info that I probably should have included). So retiring at 55 with a decent income? Eh, yeah, I think I can muddle thru...

At this point, I don't think Social Security ceasing to exist would affect me in the least.

That's awesome! Very nice pension and I see you've effectively been living off what your pension will be for the last 8 years and banking the rest, so no real lifestyle change which is nice. Plus I'm guessing there are pension splitting opportunities with your wife if you are married, so you'll get tax breaks there, which appeals to the accountant in me.

You could drive uber 2 days a week and probably end up making more than you were working full time in higher ed.

I chose the wrong effing profession

Eh, I have been IT security for the last 12-15 or so years so pay hasn't been too bad. And they factor the pension over what the salary was for the highest paid 5 years so I got it padded a little here lately - I have been an Information Security Officer for almost 9 years and they do get a little $$ to go along with all the heart aches and finger pointing.

But I am certainly ready for a change of pace.

I'll retire when they wheel me out of here in a stretcher straight to the morgue.

Yes guy, I retired on May 27th this year, my 55th Birthday present to myself. 31 years in policing was enough....enjoy it. Some days it seems a bit weird that you don't have to go back to work but keep busy and don't look back.

Congrats and thanks for the years of dedication to education.

I've been retired for some time too. Its the best time to start exploring car hobbies such as building track cars, tracking, racing, modding, detailing, restoring, and learning almost everything you can about cars. Youtube has been amazing for me. Best of luck on how you spend your time. Never should you feel bored or else you might as well go back to work.

I have the same job you had but just in the public sector so I get the "heartaches and finger pointing" comment. Big time.

Congrats to you and much happiness in your retirement.

Major kudos. 55 with 33 years is like the Holy Grail of retirement. Gotta start early and stay put. I've known a few folks who were able to do that.

Got 10 years to go before I can retire from higher ed. And I'll be late 60's. Still, between our pensions and our supplemental funds (403b), we should be comfy as well. Just hope my health and the economy hold out.
