Car insurance

Anyone else’s insurance going up even though they drive less since the pandemic started? I got my yearly renewal notice from Travelers and it went up another hundred for the next year. I’ve probably driven less than 5k a year these last two years because of WFH. Anyway I can get a reduced premium since I drive so little?

Mine went up about $100 for 6 months... this is more or less in line with what I expected.

This is with Progressive... which was significantly cheaper than Geico which tried to screw me by about $250 a year ago.

Another raise, and I'll shop around again... didnt really want to deal with it over $100.

Was just talking to my wife about this and she said our car insurance didn't go up and as a matter of fact we got ~$400 refund. AAA here.

Nice. Our "rebate" for driving less was about $14 per car, if I recall. Silly pittance considering we drove way less than 5k miles in 2020. We've driven even less this year.

We got a little money back last year. Rates went up this year - just got renewal. Someone has to pay for all those commercials, I suppose. Need to shop it every year.

The commercials are BAD. Insurance commercials have to rate as some of worst commercials to be in TV. Not funny at all.

Allstate’s Mayhem was good but they killed him off. Flo and the Gekko have been around too long, and so has the guy from Farmers. Changing the race of Jake from State Farm was a little odd and all those commercials suck regardless of which Jake.

I hate Jake, but think Liberty Mutual's are the worst.

The Farmers guy is J. K. Simmons. He was the yellow M&M in the old TV commercials (don't think he does that any more). He was also in the old HBO series Oz. That was a long time ago.

I figure with people driving less nowadays they’d lower the premiums for everyone. Maybe it’s being driven up by all these f#ckers out there stealing cats.

Didn't get what you said at first about Allstate's Mayhem. It just clicked right now who that was: Dean Winters, and he was from HBO's Oz too. I actually liked those Mayhem commercials.

He’s been in a lot of stuff over the years, including The Accountant. But think those commercials have run their course.

Yes, the Mayhem commercials were the only good ones. He was great in those. He had a short-lived TV series when he was a police officer as those commercials were winding down, but I didn’t recall it’s name.

I loved the Mayhem commercials. They were hysterical. He was on Law & Order SVU for a while.

It's CRIMINAL here, so ridiculously expensive. Paying over $4k for two cars even after a raft of discounts. It's a fucking joke here.

It's insane...one would think you're right but ponder this:
I manage an autobody facility in Florida. Driving has been way down but my business is through the roof. Its all a vicious cycle and here's some of our observations.
-less people on the road but we are having way more serious accidents here
-used car values through the roof so cars aren't getting totalled as easily
-lots of people driving damaged cars and keeping the insurance checks
-massive parts delays causing longer rental usage, increased insurance payouts

It just doesn't make sense, we are twice as busy and people are leaving the trade. We cant get parts to finish vehicles and no one is making MORE income except the insurance carriers

I'm really eager to see a study that shows where all these people are actually going. The trades have been losing people for decades but the pandemic really stepped that up. Truck driver shortages, service industry shortages, etc. Everyone is short workers. And before anyone jumps in and turns this political, I just cant believe they are all sitting at home getting fat on unemployment checks. The payouts aint that great, especially 2 years in after COVID benefits are gone. And you cant tell me these people are living off savings. So what gives. Is everyone just picking up gig work and driving for Uber Eats or something?

Hey Tommy - not sure where in Florida you are, but we visit S. Florida (Boynton Beach area) regularly to visit my wife's parents and I have to say that around there and especially on I95 S. Florida has some of the worst drivers I have ever encountered. It's not just that they drive fast or aggressive....they're just honestly stupid.
And I'm not talking about elderly drivers either.

Try I-95 in Miami a little further south for an eye opening experience. Aside from bad drivers, no vehicle inspections here so you have people riding around with bad tires and brakes, broken brake lights, etc.

Turnpike is a little better than I-95. I avoid I-95 south of Ft. Pierce whenever I can. But if visiting east Boynton turnpike won’t help.

Yeah I have no idea, it cannot just be government money as you said, there are shortages everywhere for front line labour.

Jokes aside it really makes no difference for most of us on this board. Salaries are basically 1:1, like the exchange doesn't exist. So $4K is $4k so to speak.

obviously if one is buying goods across the border this changes but in terms of wallet impact, insurance here is absolutely beyond belief.
