Passing Lane Hypothetical Question

Let's say it's 3pm on a Sunday and you're out for a little joy ride.

You're currently in the left lane (passing traffic at around 90 in a 65) when a maniac comes out of nowhere doing 110 and comes up immediately behind you. They're not in a super car or anything - they're in a Toyota Camry.

Do you change lanes immediately or do you get pissed and let him / her pass you? Keep in mind they don't give you anytime to move over...they just start riding your ass immediately.

Move to the next lane on the right side as soon as there is room. Who cares if you’re five or thirty MPH over the speed limit, which one of you is the worst driver?

I disagree. The act of someone coming up so fast behind you and riding your ass and not allowing you to move over negates my responsibility to move over. You should give the driver at least some time to move over and not act like a jackass.

Exceptions would be like a supercar rally or something...in that case, I would move over immediately

It doesn’t matter what he was driving. So basically if his car is inferior to yours, you don’t have to keep right. I don’t care how fast he was coming up on you. If you constantly pan your mirrors, you would have seen him before he was riding your ass.

An example would be a car who merges onto the freeway and immediately gets into the left lane so you don't see him / her coming doing an extremely high rate of speed.

I don't cruise in the left lane at all and I always move over but not in a circumstance like that when someone is driving like a nut job.

If I am actively passing then I would continue to pass until there is a large enough gap for me to move over. If I am not passing then I should not be in the left lane to start with and I would GTFO.

Him being a nut job is even more reason to move over and let him go. It’s safer to go right and let him be the patsy the cops see coming before you. And I’d rather have him ahead of me than riding my ass. So much road rage out there lately.

The concept of a passing lane is lost on many here in good old California.

Now with that said, move over (if the adjacent lane is open), let the individual pass you, and go about your day. If you can't change lanes, let them sit there and stew. If they're in that much of a rush, ultimately, they'll likely cut someone off to get around you. All they are trying to do is intimidate you to get you to get out of their way. The goal is to get them the hell away from your car. Also, the car they are driving is irrelevant. Whether Huracan or Smart Car, 100 mph is 100 mph, though, I'd probably crash laughing at a Smart Car doing that speed.

Lastly, you doing 90 in a 65 will be perceived by those you are flying by as maniacal just the same way you perceived the yahoo in the Camry as such doing 110 coming up on you hot.

No, firstly. Doing 90 in a 65 zone is almost as nuts as the jerk coming up behind you.

Both of you need to pull to the right a chill at 65 for a while.
