First Porsche

Finally took the plunge into Porsche with the Boxster/Cayman going electric in 2026 - or possibly hybrid. Ordered to spec and took 4 months from deposit to arrival at my dealer. This is a keeper. It’s agonizing picking and selecting options, but I am happy with the result. Porsche prices are a bit absurd. But acquiring a NA flat 6 manual was worth it, at least in my view. Anyone else buying a 718 before it’s too late?

Congratulations! Great looking Boxster!

4 months from deposit is quite good.

Good choices:
- leather interior w/deviated stitching
- carbon fiber
- RaceTex
- sport seats
- PSC (standard on GTS?)
- PSE
- GT steering wheel (standard?)

What other options are on the car?

Fantastic spec and well played on getting the NA 6 cylinder. Other than choosing a brighter colour I think i'd have specced mine exactly the same.

Is there an option to paint the centre console? That always looks great and adds value when sold. Also paint to sample though I have heard they doubled the price on that.

Color was the hardest decision besides +10mm GTS suspension delete. I drove both ride heights and decided to go with a bit more comfy. On color have a friend who ordered his exactly the same except -20mm / standard sport suspension and vanadium grey. In person the ICE grey is closer to BMW’s hockenheim silver than white imo. Or perhaps it’s a brighter shade in sunlight and more silver grey in dimmer light and at night. When you look at the color options there are plenty to choose from. It’s a personal decision but a difficult one.

Went with race tex, otherwise it’s leather. Or do you mean the climate controls? Those can be painted in exterior color or be in leather. Paint to sample very limited and not worth it on the non GT cars, and even then not sure you’ll get the money back. I am not that good at picking paint colors anyway, the only PTS that would interest me is BRG or Irish green, and this car would look lousy in green imho. The palette is pretty good for this car- 16 colors to choose from.

That looks like a fun first Porsche! I can see why you'd buy before the 718 line goes EV. I hope you enjoy it for many years!

Rumors are the electric Cayman/Boxster are known to be DOA. Macan EV flopped and Porsche knows they screwed up. It's apparently an all hands on deck situation to get a new ICE version ready.

Will be interesting to see what they come up with. I don’t think it will be non-hybrid given laws in Germany and EU. Also will take a while. I’ve heard they can’t get the BEV cayman/boxster to work on track with the sheer weight of the batteries. Further complicating is the delays in battery development. I highly doubt there will be a manual version of the next gen platform but wouldn’t be surprised if they elongate the existing 718 production.

Nice spec, I really need to drive one of these. Curious how it really compares to 997 GTS

I will say an EV macan turbo for 60% off in 2-3 years may be attractive

4 months is nothing Dealers here in the BA were telling me last Oct I had zero chances getting a GTS before the end of production. Too many ppl in front of me. And I couldn’t force myself to buy a regular one or S just because of the engine.

Luckily bumped into a CPO Spyder with the exact color spec my wife wanted. But it sits even lower than GTS sport suspension, so my wife had to quickly learn the 45 degree trick

Doesn’t 718 fall afoul of GDPR?

Yes. The 718 already cannot be sold in Australia as of January 1 of 2025 where there is a similar regulation. I am guessing they could still be produced in Germany and sold elsewhere like the US. The other glaring problem is the proposed tariffs of 25%, which if implemented (unlikely imo) would effectively kill demand for the 718 in the US. The falling China demand is probably the final straw for the platform. But what is the alternative for Porsche, to go two years without a boxster/cayman?

Yep. Plenty of Cayennes to sell in that time.
